I am planning a 40x60 pole barn and I am wanting a garage area with overhead door for various cars and tractors(under 80 hp). What size would you recommend?

Minimum 10' x 10'

14' high by 20' long sounds about right to me, as long as nothing big has to go in there.

Sorta depends upon the height of your building. I went with a 12 x 12, but should have went with a 14 or 16 foot wide one.

With a 40 x 60 barn, you can have SEVERAL doors. And they all dont need to be the same. You can go with some standard doors for cars and trucks. 9x7 or 9x8's. I'd go MINIMUM of 10x10 for the equipment. Tractors can have some pretty tall cabs and/or exhaust stacks. And I'd go atleast 1 door as high as the walls allow. For the rare occasion you may need it. Things like a backhoe need a pretty tall door unless you want to do some fiddling with the boom to get them in.

I like the 14' wide on my building, lots of extra room moving boat/camper in and out when there's other stuff around.

I agree with the multiple door approach. I went with a 8x16 double car in the center of my gable end. Now i wish id have put in a 10x10, skewed towards one side, and put in a 2nd one on the other end as a pull through. I dont get the breeze blowing through that i thought i would, even with the windows open. I really enjoy that fresh air feeling.

I went 7 x16 and love the width, but wish I went 9 feet high instead. Sooner or later you'll have a tractor with a canopy in there and low doors and canopies don't mix.

How high are you building? I have a 12' high barn and went with two 12'x11' doors.

right now my tractor (with canopy) need a 7-1/2 foot door. It will fit in my garage, but if/when I build a building I will go with at least a 12' high door. Not too many people downsize their equipment, usually it gets bigger. I also want to someday buy a 5 ton kaiser  and will need a fairly high door.
