getting ready to put up the metal siding on the gable end walls, wondering how to mark the metal to get the correct slope where it meets the roof? If the roof didnt have an overhang, i would just hold the siding up there and get on the roof and trace a line to the roof line, but i have an overhang,,my roof is 4-12 pitch, my book says to cut the metal panels at a 4-12 pitch, ok, but how do you get that?

It's easy to mark and cut, but to describe it with words. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif The 4-12 pitch means it slopes down 4' for every 12' out. Just use that ratio. How wide are your panels and I can calculate it for you? In other words 4' (or 48") is to 12' (or 144") as X is to the width of the panel.

Same as 1 ft. down for every 3 ft. across. Mayhaps use the end of a piece of plywood cut at the right angle as a quide. Get the right slope on it and cut to the width of the metal siding and gettin it all lined up is easy.

any units of 1 down -- 3 across will work

Maybe I'm confused here and feel free to correct me as it's been a long day.I always thought that it was in inches not feet am I wrong 4" in 12" or 1' in 3'

Usually it's feet, because of the length of materials used. 4" in 12" is the same as 4' in 12'.

That's the same ratio: 4 ft in 12 ft; or 4 inches in 12 inches; or 1 inch in 3 inches -- they are all the same slope. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Just try marking in out on something, and it will become clear(er).

I believe you are correct. A 4:12 pitch will produce the same angle regardless of the unit employed. And it seems to me that it would transfer to 1:3 instead of 1:4. 1:4 equals a 3:12 pitch.

So is 4 in 12, 1 in 4 as egon says or 1 in 3

Guess you answered the question I didn't want to ask before I could post

Chad,
If you're getting confused about the angle you can just mark a level line for reference and measure up from that line to the edge of the roof at each side of where your siding will go. Use those measurements to determine where to mark the siding panel to be cut.

Simply put, a 4/12 pitch give four feet of rise (vertical) to every twelve feet of run (horizontal). That ratio is 1:3.

Therefore, if your panels are 48" wide (as many are), then you would want for your distance from the high point of your cut on one side to be 16" higher than the point of your cut on the other side of the panel. Measure and mark the long side then measure the other side and mark it 16" lower, strike a line between the two marks and cut there. That gives you the 3:1 ratio on a 48" wide panel.

If you're measuring the short side, then mark that point and then measure 16" further up the other side and mark there. Strike a line between the two marks and cut along that line.

That's the way it works in a HS math class. In the real world you're going to overlap your panels so you'll need to factor that in to your planning as well. The angle is the same. You just need to remember where to make your measurements. You can't just take the measurment from the edge you're going to overlap or the new piece will be too long.

Measure twice and cut once. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
