Rather than hi-jack MrZuckerman's thread I decided to post my own Pole Barn Progress. This is a 16' x 32' pole barn addition added to the back of my existing garage. I was limited to the size I could build since my property elevation slopes down 50' about 10-15' behind the new barn. I couldn't put it on the other side of the house since the leach field is there. I have 5 acres but only can use the front 1 acre for my house and garage space. The rest is trees and wetlands. I tied into the existing structure with a 2x10 header plate for the rafters to attach to then added a second support to the 6x6 posts. Here are some pics from start to current. The floor is ready and will be poured Friday. The garage door opening is for a 9x9 overhead door which should be in early next week.

The tractor has been very useful boring post holes, leveling the spot, unloading materials from truck and trailer, backfilling etc.

Very nicely planned out. Should give you a good extra amount of storage.

Thanks John. I got tired of renting garage space for two of my cars, a classic and a street rod. Now I'll be able to keep a closer eye on them this winter and it'll be easier to work on them in the extra space. Also have enough room for the tractor so it doesn't tie up my garage lift.

George, looks really nice, I am jealous of the added space. is it tight making the turn into the pole barn?? Pictures can be deceiving but looks like an awful tight turn to drive in.

Really nice building, ties in well with the existing. I like the way the greater width of the addition gives front entry, and the large access door between the garage and addition. I can see in the pictures from the back that you made it as big as you could! Do you think you have enough roof pitch to avoid shoveling?

BTW, what is the purpose of the structural lumber over the inner door on the back of the garage? Do you plan to enlarge the opening?

But will it be warm with heat?

You can never have too much stuff! Looks like that'll hold some stuff for you. What do you think you'll have into it for materials?

I'm on the cusp of doing the same thing off 2 sides (front and back) of my shed maybe this spring and am trying to figure how much to ask Santa for.

It will be a tight turn since its only 16' deep. I can always put a wheel dolly under each wheel and roll the cars anywhere in there.

Yes, I plan to make the opening on the back of the garage a full 12' wide so I can pull in that way as well. The opening you see is 4' wide and that was for access to an attached shed that used to be there. Also the pitch is the same pitch I have on the house roof. I haven't had to shovel that roof in the 3 years its been since I put metal on that roof.

But will it be warm with heat?

It will be warm with heat when I get done. I still have to add 6" insulation to roof and walls, install my lighting and outlets, then panel the ceiling and walls. Once that is done my kerosene salamander should heat it just fine. I'm also going to put in an oil fired furnace down the road.
