How big of a tractor do you have?

Is your plow a saftey trip, or solid beam?

When I was a young'in, dads farm had a couple fields that were surrounded by sasifras (sp?) trees.I've hooked into roots big enough to sop the tractor in it's shadow. I can't tell you how much fun that is. It would sling me up against the steering wheel. (old solid beam plow)

For the most part, anything over an inch or two will trip a plow. A lot depends on what sort of tree it is also.

It just may depend on the type of plough, how many bottoms, size of bottoms, how heavy it is, how sharp the coulter is and how much tractor is sitting at the front of it.

I was going to hire it done so I don't know the answers to this.
*I didn't know there was such a thing -can always learn something on TBN.

I use a single bottom 16" with 1/2 " shear bolts. It is made by Howse. It will go thru about 4" roots easily. It may take two passes over several years to get a most of the roots cut. After the first year I notices a lot of rotting in what I was bringing up the second year. Part of the proble the first pass will be virgin soil. I have red clay here and will snap bolts just in the clay. I used self lockong nuts on the bolts. I would reuse the nuts.

If you fit the plough with a coulter knife, that is very sharp, and bolted on to the plow shear, preventing the roots from fastening between the coulter and the shear you have a good start. I would use only one bottom for this. Eventually removing or turning the other upside down.

Last spring I used my loader to push out autumn olive, honeysuckle and small trees. It left me with lots of small roots. I found an old two bottom Dearborn disc plow. It cut right through the roots. I did two acres in a short time. I will be using it again this spring for the same prossess. I am in the middle of moving and do not have my computer from last year online or set up wich makes sharing pictures hard. I will attempt to find some to put online.
