Will a blade on the front of a GX345 work very well for plowing snow ? Does anyone on here use it for plowing snow ?

I used to have one on my GX255 and it's a pain to put on and remove, and you will need chains if you want to push effectively.

I have a jd 260, a little smaller , but not by much, for light snow and cleanup it`ll do o.k., heavy snow fall that we get quite often , no way. you`ll want a snow blower or something bigger. besides chains for the tires you`ll need to add weight. just my opinion.

I have owned two different JD 240's, and still own the second one. I have a 46" blade for it. The GX series blades are 48", but otherwise identical. I know that for sure. The 240/245/260/265/285 etc etc were the forerunners of the 325/335/345/355 and later GX series machines. The frames are identical and all attachments are interchangeable.

I have owned a GX335 as well. I have swapped the blades back and forth. I can push all but the worst of snow with my little 240 using the blade with relative ease. You do need chains and extra weight. I use a 50 LB cast weight on each wheel, and 4 42 lb suitcase weights hanging on the rear hitch plate that is designed for that purpose. With that weight and the chains, it takes severe snow accumulations before snow removal becomes a problem with it.

what all is involved in putting the plow blade on, other than taking the mower deck off ?

It's so easy to do, you can actually do it blindfolded once you've done it. The blade comes with wheels that allow you to roll it back under the frame. The rear of the plow frame has two hooks with latches that go over to pins sticking out of the frame of the tractor at about the midway point. Then you connect two clevis pins closer to the front of the tractor, and finally a panhard rod at the very front of the tractor. Raise the blade and store the two wheels on their storage pin on the side of the plow frame near the blade's pivot point.

Is the plow blade manual or does it have hydraulic lift the same as the mowing deck ?

If it is mounted on a 335/345 etc it is lifted hydraulically like the deck, but mounted on a 240/260/265 etc, it is a manual lift. the manual lift is very easy though. There is a large spring on the rear of the machine that you can adjust via a crank on the rear hitch plate that makes lifting even the heavy snow blower easy. I have owned the snow blower as well, so i have firsthand experience with both it and the blade.

do you prefer the blower or the blade ? My drive way is almost a double wide and about 80 feet long. I am hoping the blade will do it for me

With my 240 being only 14 HP, I much prefer the blade. It will push the blade in some deep snow at only half throttle. The blower works the engine pretty hard. On a 335/345/355 with 20 HP, I would be happy with either. for a single stage unit, the blower throws the snow pretty well, wet or powdery.
