Hey, that is how I remember a ploughed field should look like!:D :D

I always heard that you can plant more tobacco in a crooked row than a straight one (course, that's because we couldn't drive the tractor straight).

We used the fence row as a guide so our rows started out fairly straight. We probably had more dead furrows than was necessary.

Mornin D7E,
Oh come on now, you know you have a GPS hooked up to the steering ! ;) :)

We usually lined up in the middle of the field & picked a point of reference on the other side, usually a tree or whatever. Locked eyes on it & drove straight across the field & usually were dead straight. Then we got the chisel plow & the art of moldboard plowing was lost forever. Nothing like finishing a field with a couple tri-angles & odd corners without having to run over the fresh turned dirt & everything buried!

In tose days "96" there was not much gps being used and i don't believe in it ,
If you can't drive properly you should learn not rely on a gadget ?

Well my cousin farms 26 square miles in ND...and he swears by it...especially when you link in the LanSat data for the computer optimized fertilizing...:D

Naturally the first time I saw it in operation...I tried to tell him his equipment was defective....because it turned on and off as needed as the tractor went down the row...

Hey don't get me wrong ,It works and most farms are using it here ,Even some that should'nt be (they still make a hash of it )but we farm several thousand acres owned and custom and straight lines are never an issue and overlap is not a problem because i tramline ,My problem is justifying the cost ,I am not alone ?...And we get free soil tests done on every 10 acre square block of every field every year (From local fert supplier) if requested ,It takes 24 hours to do the whole farm and find find no need to increase or reduce fert that often as our soil type is pretty standard for miles ,We achieve the same yeilds as my good friends next door who farm 10'000 acres on a high tech round the clock system ,I know this is fact because they are good friends and we spend a lot of beer time in the winter ,The only reason they use it is they can minimise machinery ,10'000 acres,2 combines ,3 tractors and 2 trucks and they have a SP sprayer ,And they run most of their work in the dark ,I have a hardi 1000 gal pull type . and there is 5 of them ond 2 of us and i still see some reseeding done because the seeder did not kick in at the start of a run and all their stuff is new every 3 years ,Is cost not an issue any more ..If it's not essential do you have to go with the flow ?
