There is no factory lawn striping kit available for my mower, so I'm tempted to make my own. Before I start experimenting, I'd like to what lessons you've learned. Rubber flaps? Brushes? Rollers? The machine is a Toro 328 with a Lastec deck. The deck rollers won't allow a striping kit to be placed behind the deck unless it was a brush or flap. I see most kits have gone the rollers so they would need to go behind the drive tires. I contacted a company making aftermarket kits and they did not recommend their product for my machine. He said that after multiple attempts they could not develop a kit that worked and had given up.

I made something like this:
All Accessories | Dixie Chopper

Using a bucket of chain from Harbor freight and a piece of angle iron from the scrap pile. It hangs behind my rear tires and does a nice job.

I've seen some use the chains and I've wondered how well they work. The chain solution would be ideal for this application so I'd really like to see the results. Got any pics?

Here is a shot of the front, been almost a week since I mowed so the stripes aren't real sharp.

Can I ask what size, length and spacing you used for the chain?

I got the 5/16 x 25' bucket for around $30 from Harbor Freight. They are cut to a length so 2 or 3 links are on the ground, the links are welded to the angle iron so they are touching each other along the length of the angle iron.

Just curious------what is the attraction for the stripes? It's quite an accomplishment for me to get my grass cut, and I'm sure not going to worry about stripes--I actually like it best when no tracks show at all.

Just personal preference?

It's a more professional look. I recently upgraded my mower and now have enough deck size that I can slow down and focus on making a quality cut instead of just getting the job done.
