Ih 2424 diesel
I have a ih 2424 diesel and I can't get it to start. It started 2 months ago using either. I am going through the whole tractor to get it to start like it's supposed to. I've changed the oil, filter, fuel, filter, hydro filter and fluid. Glow plugs are all new and work as they should. New battery, and all new fuel line. ( but I'm using soft fuel line). I couldn't find the hard line anywhere. Soooo back to basics. I would like to know how much compression it should have. I'm getting around 200 in each cylinder. I'm hoping no damage from the either we used. And also the starter may not be cranking it over enough. It turns over slow now. Any help would be great, I will be on here a lot I have a feeling.

Charge the battery
Remove the injectors from the engine and reconnect them to the fuel lines then spin the tractor over to see what fuel delivery you have. The injectors need to point away from the tractor

200 PSI seems low , unless you are cranking really slow ...

charge the battery right up ...

crack the lines at the injectors and make sure they are getting fuel ( while cranking ) ... then tighten again ...

to use ether ... you need 2 people . one to get the engine cranking ( spinning ) and the second to spray ether in AFTER the engine is spinning ....

if you squirt ether in and then crank , you stand a chance of bending connecting rods and damaging other parts ....

Ok, It does crank over slow. I've tried getting it to start so many times the starter could not be good anymore. Any way to test that? I've tested the battery and is fully charged. I bleed all fuel lines and injectors. They all squirt. What I don't know is what it is supposed to look like when it comes out. Is it supposed to be a quick squirt, or a fine mist? Is there a certain pressure that the injectors are set at? Do they make a tool for that? Also there is two bleeder screws on the fuel pump. I get fuel out of the bottom but not the top. The Manuel says to bleed them both.

if you think the starter is not cranking fast enough, pull the starter and take it to a repair place and have it checked out, the bearings can wear and the starter will slow down, and draw more amps, (there could be other problems), with the starter,

the system has to full of diesel no air, in the lines, even a few bubbles in the lines can cause problems, (why I hate to change filters or run low or out of fuel).

if you use starting fluid do not use the glow plugs,

the psi sounds low, but if your cranking speed is low and being cold could be some of that,

the diesel coming out of your lines should be small spurts or even drips, out of the injectors it should be a near fog, not squirts that do not atomize , the electronic units basically work the same but that the electronics (crack) the nozzle. not mechanical pressure, it still needs pressure to crack correctly tho.

the one he is testing is not the greatest pattern it is not atomizing as good as it should IMO

G'day as said sort out your cranking speed issue and you will increase you cyl press but 200 is too low I would expect to see in the 350 to 400 mark for good starting.

My 560IH had the same problem, fuel at the injectors(line loose), but would not start or hard and bad running(3 cylinders). I took the return line loose and tried it. I had the throttle wide open as that acts like a choke then. It started with fuel leeking out the loose return line. That means that the check valve(ball/spring) is plugged. My check valve was in the bottom of the tank and was plugged. I hope this helps. Jim
