Playin\' with the BX22
Well, Ya'll know I got this new little diesel gadget in the garage now,
I took delivery of my Kubota BX 22 with backhoe and front end loader on
Saturday and spent a whole day trying to figure out how to make it work.
Well, by Saturday night I can say that:
1) Wives simply do not see the need for a tractor such as this. No way.
2) Diesels rule.
3) Kids love 'em.
4) Incredibly tough built. Seems damned expensive at first, but then when
you look at the amount of steel in it, all the hydraulics, and the various
power takeoffs n' stuff, theres a lot of value there.
5) All your neighbors say, "By the way, if you have a minute or two on
Sunday, can you bring that over and {fill in the blank}..will only take a
minute!"
6) Turf tires truly suck in the mud, even with 4WD and a locking diff.
I've been putting off outdoor landscaping projects until this thing got
here. My ole back just ain't what it was when I was 25....well, yesterday I
really started making this tractor work digging trenches. Now, I've never -
ever tried to dig a trench with a piece of power equipment, so this was all
new to me. I've never even rented a backhoe or a Bobcat, etc. I started off
by wanting to bury rain gutter extensions using 4" pipe to get all the water
away from the house via lengths of flexible pipe. I figured about 300' of
trench total would do it. The first sections I had to hand dig, as I had my
satellite wire feed, septic pipes, and some electric in one specific area.
Rate of digging by hand was about 5' every half hour........the way I had
always done it. Ugh. No way I want to do 300' manually.
Then I got the little backhoe going once I was clear of the obstacles. HOLY
TOLEDO. This 10" bucket digs a trench at a rate of 5' every 3 minutes !!!
[censored]!! I spent more time MOVING the tractor forward, than digging with the
backhoe. OH-MAI-GAWD I should've bought one of these years ago. What a
great tool....like playing a PS2 game....move this lever, get a whole lotta dirt in
one scoop. What's a good comparison that everyone can relate to?
Well......Imagine manually adding a column of 50 numbers with only a pencil
and paper to use, then doing it with a calculator.....that's the difference.
Have 15 tons of Chesapeake Rock that came in the driveway today waiting for
me when I get home. With that front end loader, I won't even break a sweat
moving it around to where it needs to go. The thought of even possibly
doing that with a wheelbarrow was enough to make me want to move into a
condo.
Anyways, no point to all this other than to share and tell ya to GET POWER
EQUIPMENT when you have big job to do in the yard. Makes an incredible
difference, and it's fun to run those big Tonka Toys.

P.S. A.J. Foyt once said that other than driving his race car, he gets the
most fun out of moving dirt around with his bulldozer......I see why now.
