Kubota BX22
Playin\' with the BX22

Well, Ya'll know I got this new little diesel gadget in the garage now,
I took delivery of my Kubota BX 22 with backhoe and front end loader on
Saturday and spent a whole day trying to figure out how to make it work.
Well, by Saturday night I can say that:

1) Wives simply do not see the need for a tractor such as this. No way.

2) Diesels rule.

3) Kids love 'em.

4) Incredibly tough built. Seems damned expensive at first, but then when
you look at the amount of steel in it, all the hydraulics, and the various
power takeoffs n' stuff, theres a lot of value there.

5) All your neighbors say, "By the way, if you have a minute or two on
Sunday, can you bring that over and {fill in the blank}..will only take a
minute!"

6) Turf tires truly suck in the mud, even with 4WD and a locking diff.

I've been putting off outdoor landscaping projects until this thing got
here. My ole back just ain't what it was when I was 25....well, yesterday I
really started making this tractor work digging trenches. Now, I've never -
ever tried to dig a trench with a piece of power equipment, so this was all
new to me. I've never even rented a backhoe or a Bobcat, etc. I started off
by wanting to bury rain gutter extensions using 4" pipe to get all the water
away from the house via lengths of flexible pipe. I figured about 300' of
trench total would do it. The first sections I had to hand dig, as I had my
satellite wire feed, septic pipes, and some electric in one specific area.
Rate of digging by hand was about 5' every half hour........the way I had
always done it. Ugh. No way I want to do 300' manually.

Then I got the little backhoe going once I was clear of the obstacles. HOLY
TOLEDO. This 10" bucket digs a trench at a rate of 5' every 3 minutes !!!
[censored]!! I spent more time MOVING the tractor forward, than digging with the
backhoe. OH-MAI-GAWD I should've bought one of these years ago. What a
great tool....like playing a PS2 game....move this lever, get a whole lotta dirt in
one scoop. What's a good comparison that everyone can relate to?
Well......Imagine manually adding a column of 50 numbers with only a pencil
and paper to use, then doing it with a calculator.....that's the difference.

Have 15 tons of Chesapeake Rock that came in the driveway today waiting for
me when I get home. With that front end loader, I won't even break a sweat
moving it around to where it needs to go. The thought of even possibly
doing that with a wheelbarrow was enough to make me want to move into a
condo.

Anyways, no point to all this other than to share and tell ya to GET POWER
EQUIPMENT when you have big job to do in the yard. Makes an incredible
difference, and it's fun to run those big Tonka Toys.

-Duane C. <arrghhh,arrrghhhh>

P.S. A.J. Foyt once said that other than driving his race car, he gets the
most fun out of moving dirt around with his bulldozer......I see why now.

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

I'm with ya. Just got my BX22 and like you, I'm a tractor new-be. Havent used the backhoe as yet, but from what you're saying, I'm in for a pleasant surprise. I also selected the turf tires...hope I don't regret it. The new machine shares space in the garage with the Austin Healey and the Lotus Elan...just great to see all my toys in one place at one time.

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

I'm with you as well. Actually my wife was behind this class of tractor since the Simplicity 7119 we had let her down in January. I was out of town and we got about 10" of snow. She started clearing our 2200' driveway and had a really bad time of it. She made it a point to call me on the road the next morning. Unfortunately I was on the west coast and morning to her was 3:00 am, and I had just gotten in and hit the rack an hour earlier due to the same storm. In any case, she made it a point that we needed a new tractor.

I suggested a Kubota, based on known reputation. FEL - she was all for it to handle those really bad drifts that marginalize the snowblower. Then when I saw the BX22 literature I was sold on saving my back and never having to dig a serious hole again. She agreed and the deal was done, and around the price we expected.

The problem with the Simplicity turned out to be a worn out and slipping PTO clutch, and the heavy snow just made it slip all the more. $ 30 fixed it, but she was convinced we should get a new workhorse after 15 years.

Back to your point, a great machine and a real work saver. I just wish it would stop raining on the weekends so I can do some serious digging. My first job is to dig the footer to expand the 12' x 16' shed to 16' x 20' to fit the Bota with its goodies attached. I'm also putting an 8' high door on the new one so I don't have to fold the ROPS every time (and I almost took down the existing shed last week when I forgot to fold it).

As for Diesel, over 15 hours and not quite my second tank of fuel.

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

I'm with you! My back is only a 24 year old back but I'm trying to save it as much as I can :) I also am using the backhoe to dig a trench for my gutter runoff. I'm running all my gutters into one pipe which will empty into my pond. I can't believe how much easier this is then hand digging !!! I've already had people at work asking me to "help" them with some projects when I 'm done around here.

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

Just wanted to add, I went with the bar tires. They are no problem on the grass and seem to do no more damage to the grass that the turfs did on my Simplicity, in other words none. But the bars really shined when I was tromping around in the woods and trying to push some brush with nothing more than soft mush for footing. A bit of 4WD and she plowed her way around w/o any problems. I really think that the bars will show their stuff when the snow starts blowing.

Oh, we need to see photos of the Lotus and the Healy !

Here's my other toy, next to the BX.....I'm still debating which is more fun to play with.

A spare set of Bar Tires and Wheels is in my future, too. FOt the Kubota <g>.....

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

very nice...hard to decide which one to stare at. I tell my wife it's like having a harem in the garage...She just laughs. I'll have some pics of the British iron after the weekend. Enjoy!

Re: Playin\' with the BX22

Finally got around to taking a picture of the Lotus and the BX22 together. Does make for an odd couple... guess which one is more reliable? Ha!
