Would like to upgrade my fuel storage situation with a 500 gal tank. New metal tanks are $1500-2500 which are a little out of the price range and used tanks are hard to find that are in decent shape. Have seen a few of the plastic poly water storage tanks (like the ones at your local tractor supply store) being used in the past but was wondering if anyone on the forum are using them and what has been your experience (connections, leaks, ease of use, concerns on longevity)? I read they are chemical resistant but the write up is silent on fuels.

Any wrecking yds. around there for semi trucks their fuel tanks make very good storage tanks I've seen a few here in the back of pick-up trucks used for tidy tanks.

If the tank isn't rated for fuel use, then it's not capable of handling fuel, period, end of story.

Yep, they will work, that is one of the tanks I have now, I think it holds about 125 gal. I also use four 55gal drums. Looking to move to one tank for ease of use and delivery. The fuel company will deliver if over 100 gal but will charge fees to fill more than one tank or piece of equipment. And for such a small account like mine they put me on as needed call up which takes them about a week to deliver. I am burning about 100 gal a week right now clearing my property so it would be nice to have a little more fuel on hand.
Thanks.

Look into IBC totes.

Many people use them for fuel storage, they can often be gotten for free or < $100.

I have used a 300 gallon poly tank for diesel since 2003. Not a single issue. It's inside my barn on a 10' stand. Gravity is cheap and works even when the power is out!

Where you at?

I have about 30 fuel tanks for sale.

300 gallon steel tank, 12v pump, meter, hose, and nozzel for $500

550 gallon with the same setup is $600

1000 gallon with same setup is $875

All located in Indianapolis 3 miles off I70.

I am about 400 miles from Indianapolis. Are these new? $600 for a 550 gal and pump seems like a smoking deal compared to what I am looking at. I have found one used 500 gal tank with water and oil in it (rusty inside) and they are stuck on $500 and I get keep the oil and water to dispose of.

I am using a about 20-25 gal grey poly tank for going on 10 years without any problems.
At that capacity I can actually manhandle it as it sports 2 hand grips.
I have rigged it with a rotary hand crank pump and it takes but a few mins to fill my 20 hp tractor.
I mounted it on a wheeled cart for convenience.
Last year I replaced the hand pump with a 12 volt small electric pump.

One thing I like is that plastic does not rust nor does it sweat and add water to the fuel. (but I still use an additive 'just in case')

Hoping you are talking about diesel fuel. Gasoline can be very dangerous in a plastic tank. I have two 100 gallon aluminum side tanks off of big rig trucks that where dinged that I got for free. I modified one for a 12 volt fuel pump that I plug into a cigarette lighter that I mounted on all my tractors. Just pull up, plug it in, and fuel just like at the gas station. I've found that 200 gallons is just about right. I go through it fast enough to keep it fresh, I can afford to fill it without it hurting too bad, and I'm not having too many issues with it getting dirty or algae growing in there. I think that having more fuel on hand would result in more issues, especially if you only use a few gallons a week. I have two tractors that run all the time, plus a dozer that uses about 40 gallons a day to run. Fortunately I don't run it as much as I used to when digging my lake. :)
