Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

For entry level, try a revolver. I like the .38/.357 and .44sp/.44mag combos. Particularily, the S&W 686 and 629. You can plink with light .38 or .44special loads, or really reach out for something with the magnum loads. They are easy to shoot. I like semi-auto's, but like a revolver for a first pistol.

Another thing about that setup, is the availability of lever actions in those calibres. A 686 and a Marlin .357 lever action make a great combo.

The Ruger Blackhawk in .357 is ok. I have had one, but found it needed a Gunsmith to tune it up, right out of the box. It shot mediocre out of the box, but was really nice after a tune-up.

Glock has nice semi-auto's, but my favortie is the Desert Eagle in .44mag. Before UPS stole mine, I had had it ported. It had had some tuning done to it. It consistently hit silhouettes at 100m or about 112 yards, off-hand. It was not, though, an entry level pistol.

Of particular note, I would advise you check out you local ranges. Some rent rifles and pistols; you might be able to try a few out before making an investment, just like these tractors...

I was in a similar situation years back. Although I had shot rifles for years, I had little pistol expierience. I took a NRA/range pistol course(1/2 day). It was well worth it.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Hmmm. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd say the majority of handguns bought probably cost $400-$900 - but again, that is really just ballparking it. Some brands don't offer handguns that cost that much while others don't offer anything that low in price.

that said, I know - you asked a "simple" question, but there are a lot of things will directly affect the type of cost you are looking at. You can spend $300 or $3000 for a "good" one - all depends on the features you want and purpose.

Will this be for target work? Personal defense? Hunting? General "plinking?" Cowboy Action shooting?

What kind of "power" do you want? "paper cutter?" "beast stopper?" somewhere in between?

Do you want stainless or blued? Do you have an affinity for a particular style like military or "old West?" Do you want a "tricked out" gun or one that is basically "stock?"

All of these things would affect the price but would also impact what would make a "wise" choice. (hunting hogs with a .22 pistol wouldn't work too well for example /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I won't go in to my "favorites" or recommendations - I just don't have enough info to offer something specific up yet.

Let us know your thoughts on your uses/desires. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

Thanks for the reply.
I am looking for a pistol for personnal protection and one I could hunt with/carry around on my farm etc.I am not into competition shooting. But would like a good gun none the less.
Ranchman you bring up a lot of things to think about and ponder over before I purchase one.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

I would think .357 would be a good choice. Many brand options for a quality pistol. Ammo availability is excellent also. It's hard to beat the reliability of a revolver. Something to think about is the barrel length, 8" would probably be best, since you said hunting. If it were mainly for personal protection, you could go with something of lighter caliber easily, also much more compact & lighter weight, say a .38 revolver, 9mm auto, .40 auto, etc. Gun Test magazine is an excellent source of info. Public ranges as previously mentioned are a good way to try out many types of firearms.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

For personal protection and toting around the farm, a .357 is tough to beat. In an 8" configuration with appropriate loads, it is supposed to be adequate for deer hunting, although I think that barrel length would be somewhat awkward for belt holster carry.

If hunting were secondary, a good 4" barreled double action .357 such as an S&W or Ruger would be a great choice for personal use. If hunting were your primary reason, then a 44 mag single action with a 5.5 to 7.5" barrel would be a better choice. However, recoil is more of a factor.

As an aside, I have hunted with a 4" .357 (unsuccessfully). I have no doubt that it would have been sufficient to kill a deer out to my self-imposed range of 25 yards.

Either the .357 or the .44 can be downloaded for recoil management. The .357 shoots .38 special and the .44 mag shoots .44 special (and .44 Russian too btw). A big bore handgun like the .44 stoked with lighter loads is still a more imposing piece than a .357.

Hey, why not buy two or three? A .22 for general plinking, a .357 for packing on the farm, and a .44 mag for deer hunting. Check out Ruger's lineup of single action revolvers for inexpensive (NOT cheap) options in all of those calibers that look/work/feel very similar to one another.

Re: Pistols(whats a good one to buy ?)

We have a gun store in our area that also has an indoor range. They have a broad selection of handguns (Probably 60-70) that you can rent and try out in the range. They charge $25 to join, and $8 to shoot in the range with unlimited time. The cost of doing this will be a lot cheaper than buying a second gun later if you don't like the first one. If you have a similar store in your area that would be a great way to try the different styles, calibers, sizes, trigger pull, weights, etc. Then you can make a decision based on actual personal data rather than someone elses opinion. I'm not saying that the info you get here is flawed, just that one size doesn't fit all.
I just wish I had found this store before I bought what I did. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Good Luck

Hey BubbaJr, if you don't like what you got, someone else will. Trade it off and get the one you want. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
