Looking good Chris :) Is it an optical illusion or this thing is missing head? Any specifics on it that you want to share.

JC,

I had a couple of 'em.....a '72 gasser and a '71 diesel. The 8-speed is a MUCH better tranny over the 6-speed. You'll be happy with it once done.

JC,

Might be the angle you are seeing it from.

the engine is together with head and injector lines... looks a lil different than the gasser.

hood center section is off as well as the battery.

I like to start working on them while still on the trailer.. easier to move around them and get under them.. and if i spill oil during servicing.. it's easier to clean up the trailer deck vs my concrete or pasture.

I don't mind the 6 speed.. but i really do like and prefer the 8spd.. some of my other fords have that crashbox.

Good Mornin Chris,

The good news is that tires wont be on the list of things that are needed ! :)

I used mine for hayin' quite a bit back when they were still around here. The additional 2 gears gave a better range of ground speeds when at PTO speed.

Good Afternoon Bill,
I dont own any tractors with an 8 speed but I did help out the farmer down the road last week. I raked about 25 acres with his John Deere 1530 which IMO was a very nice utility tractor with 45 pto hp, and did most everything with that tractor in 5 th gear. I was using a John Deere 898 I think ground driven unit and 5th gear was the ticket. So in my very limited experience, 8 gears are a nice transmission choice IMO !

BTW that tractor has a nice low stance and seemed quite stable on some of the side hills I had to do !

Ah! Another Bluester saved from the scrap heap.
Very nice find.
How far did you have to go for this one?
How much restoration effort are you planning before parading this gem?

yep.. both rear tires are virtually brand new.

front tires are used but good.. unfortunately.. AND mismatched! one is a multi rib 6x16.. the other is a tri-rib 6.5-16SL ( taller )... luckilly, I happen TO HAVE GOOD USED TIRES, ON RIMS IN BOTH THOSE SIZES, SAME TIRE STYLE. SO I CAN EITHER SWAP OVER TO THE SL TRI RIBS.. OR THE MULTI-RIBS.. ( oops.. sorry for caps! )

For sure. I always thought there was too much difference between 4h, which ain't fast.. 5h.. which is ok to move around.. and 6h which is too fast for other than moving between pastures.. or on good hard ground anyway..

'bout a 140m drive... took a saturday morning and most o fthe day..

it's going to get the full meal deal... fix all mechanicals back to operating condition.. rebuild ge/starter.. new belts / hoses, fluids.. adjust clutch.. do a lil brake work, etc. I see a few broke parts neeidng replacements.. plus I'm getting a new front clip, grill, and at least one new fender skin..

after she's 100% mechanical and working.. then she'll get the pressure wash, degrease, sanding, prime and paint..

this one likely won't be a parade machine.. but will pull a 'small' mower to get at the corners of the fields and beside buildings that i can't make it to with my 10' and 15' mower... might cut a few trails in the small margin of woods I have at the back of the farm.. etc.. all stuff my 70+ hp tractors can't get to..

Soundguy, for most peoples choice the 3000 is the best tractor ford ever made. I still like the 851 myself. The 3000 has roughly the same HP but weighs a good bit more and has 3 more gears.
Does it have 16.9s they sure look like a load of tires?

Hey Scotty!

I've been wondering what you've been up to. I finally took the plunge and retired from the GC I worked for, and now have more time to devote to the mowing business. We've had about all the rain we need this year, so grass and weeds are growing fast. Lots of mowing....

Those 1530 Deere's are one of the better utility tractors Deere ever built. Just the right power for the size and weight. Hayin' is probably the most "speed sensative" task I know of for a tractor. Especially so when baling. You're more or less locked in on engine speed, so getting ground speed right is all about gearing. Most of the MF135's, 150's, and 165's came with 6-speeds, many of them with MultiPower. Only a handful had the 8-speed. (Of which my 150 is one) Makes for a more productive tractor. I plow, disc, mow, and USUALLY bale in Hi/1st, which is 5th gear. I rake in Hi/2nd (6th) and just a bit less throttle.

14.9x24 r-1 on the 3000. and some 6-16 multi-ribs on the front.

I have some 16.9-24's sand and turf tires on my naa.

I'm seriously considering swapping the 14.9-24 ag tires tot he naa since it has a loader and runs out of traction fast.. and putting those 16.9 turfs on the 3000 since it will be a lawnmower... lot of tire to swing around though!

Looks like the batteries would be a issue sitting on top of the motor, not corrosion problems? Heat damage to the batteries?

when they boil over you get corrosion.. just got to keep everything clean and painted.

they are easier to get to up there as the try swings out.

Nice find. The 3000 was a real popular size in our area. Most were the diesel w/8 speed. The biggest complaint I heard on the 3000 was not enough brakes.

Are you going to do the oil filter conversion or leave the original canister?

There have been a couple of posts on here about the paint on bed liner. Wonder how that would work to paint the inside of the battery tray? Any way, Congrats on the new toy...er....tractor.

Naw.. i like the canister.. it's heavy thick metal.. I've had sticks and rock chips dent and poke a soda-pop thin spin on oil filter..

I got some good paint on the bracket now.. that should be good for years to come..
