Is there a specific reason why the front tires on some tractors (as on the Farmall) are close together? Gerard

If I remember correctly it was to get between the rows when they were in the field.

On a different note, is that Allis actually 4x4 or did the owner just put the tires on for effect?

Thanks JayC. That makes sense but sure doesn't look to sturdy.

As for the Allis, that a good ?. I can't tell if it is or isn't. Gerard

They are very sturdy, I have spent many hours on one brush hogging, planting, and cultivating. For many many years that was THE way a real tractor looked. It is called a tricycle front end. As the other poster said, they were intended to go between the rows of crops. One big advantage of the set up was that they could turn on a dime and give you some change back.

They also were great for corn pickers back in the early days before combines. This allowed the heads to be on each side of the tractor.

gerardc, you mean to tell me your a vetern member and have never seen a narrow front on a tractor, that's about all you use to see years ago, alot of the older, vintage tractors the wide front end on some models is a rare thing, take a vintage tractor(no power steering) wide front and a narrow front and see which tractor drives better.
