I am in the process of building a pheasant pen rather like a pole barn construction. It is 16 feet wide and 70 feet long. The top will be bird netting held in place by green house hoops. 5 foot on center. The 4 x4 are PT and are 10 feet on center or as close as we could get them the post hole digger walks in such rocky dirt. We have PT 2 x8 on the bottom and then 42 inches up is a 2 x4 to attach the wire to, then there will a top board another 4 feet about that again PT for wire 2 x 6. There will be center poles under the green house hoops for support. Then the bird neeting which is 2 inches and a break strength of inches of 95 lbs. We are going to attach the metal hoops to the 2 x 6 with some clamps. I am not sure the best way to do this I will take some pics tonight I am having sand delivered today so that the pen will be dryer we have taken the sod off. I will have time to take some pictures tonight. Was curious about other ideas people might have for attaching the green house hoops to the 2 x 6. Will get pics posted tonight after the sun goes down.

Here are some pics, of course as soon as we started this project it has been dry as a bone and now it rains every night when we go out to work on pen. Last night I had about 23 ton of sand brought in and the driver could not get back far enough to tail gate so it had to be spread with the tractor. Two friends are helping build the pen, we got some of the wire on last night and need to get the center posts in and the rest of the wire on before we attach the green house hoops. Pen is 16 feet wide and 70 feet long.

Michelle, have you been raising pheasants already? I have a good friend that raises them commercially. He has to put blinders on the birds or they will peck the other birds bare. He also raises quail and chuckers and runs a hunting preserve in NE Kansas. A couple of years back, he lost 10,000 birds due to flooding. I've seen his rearing pens and he basically has netting over the top of everything with small poles keeping it above 7' tall. I can get you his phone # if it would help you and you could ask him anything you need help with, he's a very nice young man. Send me a pm if you need to contact him.

Michelle - I used the greenhouse hoops for a duck aviary, pvc coated hex wire covering the entire thing.

Thumbs up for the size you are building yours, it is looking good.

Hi guys
Have not been near the computer to much been busy we go the sand spread this week and the central poles up and a supports for the green house hoops we used some PT 2 X 4,2 X6 next I think I will put up a roof system and tin the roof. Then I will need to worry about weather when I put my birds outside. But this will not be to next year.
I will take some pictures tonight have been busy the rain has been such a pain. We have showers almost ever night or day. As you can image makes building tough. I have 62 pheasants waiting to go in pen as soon as we finish and the waether get a little cooler. I will post pics of duck pen also. But to answer someone questions I have some experience in raising the Pheasants I did it a few years ago. And this year I raised 125 mallards. Ducks are bigger mess but easier then pheasants.

I've always wanted to do something like this, but so far, it's just one of many ideas that I have without any real plan of really doing it. I'm enjoying your progress and I'm impressed with the size of it. You're not messing around!!!

Keep up the pics and comentary, I'm looking forward to seeing how it comes out and some birds in there.

Well here are some pictures of the pheasant Pen with birds feeders and cover. We still need to add more cover for now I just had a little roof put over the feeders and to give the birds some more shade. Next year I am going to place metal roof over the whole thing. But I need to make another pen for more birds, so that is next project will not be as big as this one.
Maybe 20 by 30. There will be a tunnel to run them from one pen to another.

Take a look Still using a tarp and some kennel fencing for a catch pen
and also shade and cover for an indoor feeder. With 4 water things and
over 200 lbs a food they are not much care just check the pen everyday
and that it is.
