This was made for another forum but maybe you guys would like to see this.. This is my personal summery of vehicles types and there year around utility for working ski (XC) trails but I'll only cover machines I have experience with. That is tow sleds, ATV's, 6x6's and UTV's. They're utility will be listed as 0 being none, and 5 the best and I'll cover the categorizes listed below. I've operated Pisten Bully's but I'll not include them here.

1. Summer time trail work utility.

2. Winter grooming tow capability. (towing capacity)

3. Winter operators visibility of implements/trail .

4. Winter operator comfort.

5. Machines width or size on trails.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Work snowmobiles in general. Due note, all sleds require modification to be proper tow machines.

1. Summer time trail work utility. 0 They can't do anything and must sit over the summer.

2. Winter groom towing capability. 2 Poor.

3. Winter grooming implement/trail visibility. 5 Very good.

4. Winter operate comfort. 4 Very good and can be hard on operators upper body.

5. Machines width or size on trails. 5 Very good, Sleds are the most narrow listed here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

ATV's with pods in the winter, wheels in summer and all modifications for winter use.

1. Summer time trail work utility. 2 Can't haul much without a trailer.

2. Winter groom towing capability. 4 Very good

3. Winter grooming implement/trail visibility. 4 Very good

4. Winter operate comfort. 4 Not bad with proper winter setup.

5. Machines width or size on trails. 5 Very good, nearly as narrow as a sled.

------------------------------------------------------------

UTV's with pods in the winter, wheels in summer and all modifications for winter use

1. Summer time trail work utility. 5 Very good! This is were UTV's shine.

2. Winter groom towing capability. 5 Very good!

3. Winter grooming implement/trail visibility. 2 Very poor with all the glass and distance from your implements.

4. Winter operate comfort. 5 Very good!

5. Machines width or size on trails. 2 Largest or widest of all machines listed. Must be taken into consideration for implements used.

----------------------------------------------------------

6x6's with pods in the winter, wheels in summer and all modifications for winter use.

1. Summer time trail work utility. 5 Darn good with its box and you can still haul 2 people on these.

2. Winter groom towing capability. 5 Very good! This machine will have the lowest ground PSI and can still tow much.

3. Winter grooming implement/trail visibility. 4 Nearly as good as a sled or ATV..

4. Winter operate comfort. 3 Not bad, same as a ATV.

5. Machines width or size on trails. 5 Very good, nearly as narrow as a sled.

And depending on your ski trail location, there are also horses and mules on those very same trails too after the snow melts till the snow returns. :)

If anyone has any comment of questions, feel free to post them. I've operated Pisten Bully 100 and 400 but didn't feel inclined to include them here.
