Looking of info, is the newer 4.2L Perkins out of a case CX70 a possible engine replacement for the old 4.236. I have a old 970 Bobcat with a worn out 4.236, and have found that remans are quite expensive, and good used ones are hard to find. Found a good used 4.2L Perkins for a good price. also found the 4.2 is basically a new version of the old 4.236. But noticed a few differences, for example no lift pump on block, oil fill in timing cover instead of rocker cover, ECT. I am a auto and truck mechanic, so I can do some fabrication, just want to know more about the differences before I decide. Any input? P.S. anyone know if the 4.2 injection pump is computer controlled?

Bob, that Perkins 4.236 is what HP?

I've got a BobCat 825 that had a Perkins 4.108 (that's 4 cyl, 108 CI) that had a cracked sleeve. Finding a good used engine on that size is near impossible. They were imported for some BobCat's (actually Clark back then), Gehl skid steer, and sail boats.

Buying that engine complete can not be imported because of new EPA regulations. So I went another route. I installed a Kubota V2203. Had to make front and rear engine mounts, have the flywheel machined for the CV joint flange, and a few other modifications. It was a reefer engine so I had to change the oil pan to get the engine to line up with the hyd. input shaft. Lots of work, lots of fun!

I no not know if the IP is computer controlled on the 4.2, but I'd suggest measuring the height, width etc. to be sure it will fit in the engine cavity. It looks like a tall engine.

I'm curious, what's a "good price" for that engine? How many hours?

Perkins are very tough, long lasting engines. The one you have has cylinder liners, if the oil pressure is good, it might just need new pistons, rings and liners. You might consider doing that, sending the head to a machine shop to be redone, put in a new or rebuilt oil pump, get the injectors refurbished, and get a lot more hours out of the engine you have. Even if it needs the crankshaft reground, you might be better off than retrofitting something new. They're old school engines, not hard to work on.

Thanks, but I have since found out the 4.2 Case engine is close but the block mounting is different, and other thins that would make it more than I want to do. The engine is sold now, but was 1500.00. from a township tractor that got rear ended, while mowing ditches.

I have found a direct replacement, good used, I think I will get. Price is in my budget, and cheaper than rebuilding mine even with shipping. And I can sell mine as a core when done.
