Hi. Brand new to the forum.
I have recently purchased a MF 35 Serial # SNMY 328509 which dates it 1963, dual clutch and diff lock with the Perkins 3cyl Diesel engine.
Engine has done 1660 hours, and i believe this to be accurate given the condition of the tractor.

I am having some trouble with it starting. While it will start and run fine, while cranking over from cold it produces a lot of white smoke and when it first fires a decent puff of black smoke comes out.
After cranking for around 20 secs it will start and run on 2 cylinders. Running at 1200 RPM for another 10-15 secs the third cylinder will kick in and the black smoke reduces to very little.
When it is running, at a constant idle little or no black smoke it noticeable. When revved a typical small puff of black smoke is seen (though not very thick) that then dissipates.
I obviously want to repair this. After extensive google forum searches and talking to various people, I'm after other opinions.
Further to this, the coolant appears fine and the level seems to stay the same. No bubbles are present so I feel the head gasket is ok.
Engine oil is down slightly but I haven't done enough hours to see if it is using any oil or whether the lower level is due to normal consumption. The exhaust is not oily, just the normal diesel black. Oil is not watery or discolored in any way. No blue smoke has ever been seen by me.
The only thing left that seems obvious is the injectors. I doubt very much they have ever been serviced, and the manual states every 500 hours (I think) for this.

What do people think? Should I look elsewhere? Compression test?
If the rings were gone the engine oil should give me some indication. I have not removed the dipstick while running to feel for pressure buildup in the block. Would this be an indicator anyway?
I am yet to do a full service including filters, so the fuel filter may be fairly blocked up, but this should only affect performance and generally starve then engine.

Feel free to address anything I have said.

Well after reading your post a few times it seems like you don't have a fuel problem. Since you said that you have white smoke when cranking we know that the engine is getting fuel. It almost sounds like you have semi-low compression on two cylinders and low compression on one cylinder. Because diesel engine work on compression and heat for ignition the excessive cranking is required until the cylinder temperatures are able to reach a high enough point for the cylinder to start kicking. Personally the next thing that i would do is do a compression test as that will be the easiest way to get an idea of the condition on the engine.

grofarms - thanks for your input.
Banjodunn - thanks for the discussion on the phone today.

I have decided to start off with the easy and cheapest options first and will change the engine oil and filters and fuel filters and see what difference this makes. Then an injector cleaner that is added to the fuel will be next to see if that helps.
I will report back how things go, and if anything changes.

On a separate note, I found a MF35 workshop manual that is free to download for anyone.
Address here:

Massey Ferguson 35 Workshop Manual | Cian's Blog

It is 65mb, so may take a while if your net is not very good.
Its 383 pages long and covers everything and how to rebuild the entire tractor. Well worth having

G'day Stevo been talking with the boss man and he asked me if you had direct or indirect injection the way you tell is the indirect injectors go straight up and the direct ones are on an angle into the head.

He also said that they had a habit of getting sticky needles in the injectors if they where just pottered around on and not worked (his words "they are an engine that needed to work'") if it is indirect inj then those injectors I told you about are no good.

We are both of the thought that do as I told you and work it as hard as you can for a couple of hours and there is a good chance it will get better, boss also said that thermostart is a must on those engines.

Thanks Jon.
It is indirect injection. Injectors sit straight up.
Going to get some new fuel filters in the next few days and hopefully fit them this weekend. Will see how time goes.

Had MF35 with similar things on starting and found out it was cranking speed and replaced armature and brushes on starter.

Cranking speed did come to mind and as the battery was cactus i replaced it today with a Super Charge 660CCA. Definitely started better. Filters are on order and will be in by the end of the week but I probably won't get around to putting them in until next weekend.
Fresh diesel has also seemed to help, as i was unsure of how long the other stuff had been in there.
Was probably summer diesel and could have contributed to my problems with the cooler weather
