2 weeks ago I bought new tractor tires, and within a week I promtley ran over something that pierced both the the tire and tube. The tire shop said it would need to be sent out to be fixed. This cost me 95$ for just the repair, not counting the new tube and mount. I made the stupid mistake of not looking at the tire when I picked it up. The tire was already mounted on the tire. When I got home I saw the repair. WOW was it ugly. The punture site was on the tread between lugs, about 2 inches long. The repair looks like they shaved some ruber off the lugs, melted it onto the tire and added a patch over it. I was under the impression the patch would be made from the inside. This patch job is at least 3/4" thick on the outside of the tire between the lugs? Is this normal? It looks like crap! Maybe its a "gorilla patch" , ugly but strong. It just doesnt seem like its going to last being on the outside. Any thoughts?

Are you sure it's just on the outside and not all the way through? I never heard of patching the outside of a tire but there are patches and boots that go inside and there's plugs that go all the way through and I don't know what else they may have come up with in the last 6 or 8 years.

I got (2) flats on the front of a new tractor shortly after purchasing it when my uncle asked me to plow his garden where he had disposed of some old thorn-apple branches. Luckily they were tubeless, and a dollar's worth of repair kit parts and 5 minutes later, the repairs were made and I have not had another flat since. What kind of new tractor did you buy that had tubes in the front?

I cut a 2" long gash in the tires center between the lugs. The tire was taken off and patched inside. They also added a boot on the inside over the patch. They added some type of product (forgot the name) to the gash on the outside to keep small rocks/small stobs and other debree from being mashed into the cut. Call the tire shop for their input on the fix.

My tractor sits in the shed right now with a 18" long deer antler stuck all the way in to the first tine (3/4" dia). Got it this morning mowing the back side of my 40 acres. It was between the lugs on a 14.9-28 R-1 tire.

Called my tire shop and they ordered a new tire (319 bucks) as this old tire is 11 years old with two plugs and pin hole between the two O O in Goodyear in the sidewall. The dealer laughed and said he has a antler on his desk from another customer with a tractor tire that happened just two weeks ago.

Sorry, this was on the rear tire. It was supposed to be "buffed", "ground", and "patched". The receipt said "section repair". I'll call tomorrow and find out what actually was done. I dont know why a liner wouldnt have worked. I guess to seal the actual crack.

Might it have been a hot or chemical vulcanizing patch from the insid ethat extruded outside.. then they trimmed it down a bit?

In my area, they probably would have just put in a large farm patch on the inside.. booted it maybee.. then put a new tube in.. or patched the old one.

I've seen some old tractor tires even 'laced' up using bailing wire.. then a patch applied over it.. then some goop like bead sealer on it to keep debri out as much as possible..

A " Section " is were they actually cut out a certain size area , although when I say cut out , it is not like a square hole through the tire , But a size larger than the damage on inside and same on outside , then bond new rubber in place . This was , maybe still is ??? , a technique used on semi trailer tires years ago . On those type tires , they would take out down to the cords / steel belts on the inside and outside , then reapply new rubber, thus it had to be sent out to usually a retreading type factory .

My Dads semi trailer use to get all kinds of garbage stuck in the tires picking up at all the ranches and farms in eastern oregon , thus he always carried not just 1 but 2 spares , of which usually 1 or both would of been already repaired that way .

One Note though , Those were highway tires and Two , those type repairs were usually on sidewalls , not in tread area , but with a Ag tire , it should not matter .

A section repair is just like FredH said they grind down and add new rubber
on a Tractor tire its an ugly repair but usually works ok
beats buying a new tire usually and yes its done from both inside and out
