Parts for older power tools?

Back in '97 my wife gave me a Craftsman scroller type jigsaw, I have enjoyed using it and have become very attached to it. However, the brushes are worn down and it stopped working, went to SearsPartsDirect a half hour ago, and the site told me the brushes are no longer available for this model. The saw is perfectly usable if I can obtain a pair of replacement brushes, they are likely a universal type, 1/4 inch square by 1/2 inch long. I hate to toss a favorite, MADE IN THE USA tool and buy a new IMPORTED model because of two little worn out brushes.

Could anyone steer me towards a site I can obtain new brushes? Thanks.

There is a guy on EBay; tool dude.com, that sells most DIY parts for repairs.

Your tool is NOT made by Sears, but most probably a Black & Decker offshore fabricated private label.
You will need to order the closest size and use fine sandpaper to wear it down to size.
I have saved many tools this way. Easy.
Also some good REAL hardware stores (not big box) often carry brushes.

With Sears no PN's will not cross over to actual maker, even if the tool is an identical copy in a different color.

I know Sears doesn't make it's own power tools, in the past many were manufactured by Emerson...thanks much for the info on the Ebay seller...and get this, I found something during a search where some guy said his dad made his own brushes by taking "D" size batteries apart, and sanding down the carbon center core...gee, I have a lot of old D cells I am saving for the next trip to the hazardous waste collection center....

That's I was just going to say. You can use bigger brushes and shape them up to match your application. I have done it few times too.

You can go to a tool repair and buy a set of brushes that are similiar. I have put other brands of brushes in just use sand paper to size them. I have a Jepson chop saw that I wore the brushes out. I could not easily get brushes so I used a set of industrial motor brushes that we have at the plant. I put 2 per brush holder because the brushes were very wide. For your saw just match up the brushes by shape and as long as the carbon feels similiar because they do make hard and very soft types, as to the lead wire you may have to solder or crimp it.

Thanks, I should have mentioned that the brush holders have lead wires fastened to them. I also have an old Craftsman circular saw with a bad gearbox, gonna look at the brushes it has today.

I have an old Craftsman floor drill press. Needed a new washer and lock-washer (not standard or available in hardware stores) that was no longer available thru Sears online. Once I figured out manufacturer of drill-press (B&D made this one) I searched online thru their parts lists of drill presses and found same part. Numbers didn't match but diagram was clear enough to tell it was same...and it was.

May or may not work here, but never know.
