MF 1540
Called the local MF dealer because I need a new tie rod end for my 1540. Quoted me $108. Online search found it for $46. I like to shop local and will pay more then online prices but that is a ridiculous markup. Is this the norm or does my local dealer (West TN) have a higher profit margin then other areas?

On two occasions, I've told local dealers, I am willing to pay them 10% more than the price I can get it on line from another dealer, for parts I needed.

They both immediately took the deal.

You should also see if your dealer has it on line cheaper, and insist on paying that price.

If you are worried about upsetting your dealer, (you shouldn't, it's business), go to a different one.

My first dealer stopped selling MF, before I ever had a chance to buy any parts from them, and they didn't lose sleep over how I felt about it.

manufacturers of a finished product don't make anything themselves, they buy parts from someone, and assemble the product using those parts, it's cheaper for them that way, since they don't have to invest in equipment and employees, etc.. so yeah, if you could find the source of a needed part, it's cheaper to buy from that source..

Agco doesn't do the dealer many favors either, so spend your money the way you feel.

last yr my alternator went out on my JD. Local dealer quoted me just under $400 for the small 40 amp alt. It was made by Denso so I did an online search for it and had one shipped to my house for $84. That is a ridiculous markup by JD

Good thinkin Gimmodog.. THAT happens more than anyone would think.. JD didn't make that part.. along w/ hundreds of other parts that are under that hood..
If folks would take the time to actually LOOK, they can find the part much less expensive, than picking up the phone & calling the dealer..

Perhaps.

As of the last time I checked, you can't buy the GC block heater from the supplier. Leaving only the 5x the going price, MF parts counter, if you want one.

That fact leads me to suspect, they made a deal with the supplier, that doesn't permit it.

It sometimes works the other way. Years ago I needed a bearing for an old Cat water pump. It was a standard bearing and I priced it at several bearing houses and it turned out that the lowest price was from Caterpillar. And today I needed a Ford part that I found prices for online but no one had it in stock or if they did they were on the east coast and shipping would致e taken days. As a last resort I called the local Ford dealer and they had the part in stock and I ended up paying about 20% less than the online prices. I know these are two isolated cases but it does happen.

You're right. Mercon V transmission fluid is cheaper at the Ford dealership than any of the parts houses around here. At least it is here in my area.
