Does anyone else have problems with the parking brake on a TC-40D disengaging when you get on and off the tractor? It does not happen every time but it happens often enough to be getting annoying.

Are you kicking the lever with your foot when you get off? I did that a few times when I first got my tractor, but haven't had any real problems.

Seems like there was a post a while back on the parking brakes on Class III Boomer's not engaging well and one of the NH tech guys, probably RickB, posted a fix if I remember correctly.

Bob,

My TC35D does it too !!! Not always...but enough to be a pain in the butt.

I've checked the linkage and the position of the mount ( see Brad's link ), but nothing to adjust.

I think there is just enough flex in the deck to cause the pivot to disengage. In my case, my bulk ( 6'3" - 255+ ) landing on the step does enough twist to unlock it.

Here's what I do...set the brake extra hard when I'm on a slope, I dismount the tractor on the loader handle side.

When I get some time I'll investigate this more and come up with some way of locking it better.

Good luck and watch out for that rolling tractor !!!!

Me again....

I got a chance to spend a while laying on my back looking up at the brake pedal linkage and the parking lock arrangement.

What I saw seems to be the root of the occasional unlocking some of us have seen.

The locking lever is parallel with the centerline of the tractor ( front to back ). The brake linkage, however, angles away from the centerline about 20 degrees or so. When the parking brake is engaged, only the corner of the tooth engages the bar stock welded to the brake linkage.

I'm going to look into heating up this toothed part and rotaing in the match the angle of the pedal. You can't turn the whole assembly because the handle linkage and switches will be out of whack.

If anyone gets a chance...crawl under and look up and see if you see the same angle conflict.

TBNers....re-engineering tractors one piece at a time !!!!

Here is the angle mine is at. So far no problems with it coming unlocked. Knock on wood...

From the side view you can see the tooth is completely engaging the bar stock. Does yours not have this much contact to it?

Great pictures, Brad. I have removed the parking brake linkage twice on my TC45D when it started to bind so badly I had to push down on the handle to get it to disengage (just the opposite of the problems others are seeming to have). The pivot point doesn't have a grease zerk and I wish it did because that is where my binding occurs. I remove it, grease it, reinstall it, and the problem goes away...so far. My property is hilly, so I use the parking brake all the time. I'm not exactly a tiny fellow either. I'm 6'0" and 240#, but I've never had the brake release inadvertently. I hope I don't./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Brad,

Mine doesn't seem to engage quite as well as yours. In fact, the chamfered steel welded to the brake pedal has a bit of a divot chewed out of it where the link engages it.

There is quite a bit of slop in all the lingage points and I have to believe that the accuracy spec on that brake pedal weld-on isn't the tightest.

I'm gonna put a twist in my toothed link and align it with the brake thingy. I figure if it doesn't work, I'll have to either flatten it or just buy a new part. I think its wothwhile for the security of a proper lock-up on the brake.

I'll keep you guys updated.

ps: You must have some tight macro lens on that digital camera Brad. With me under the tractor I have trouble getting my eyes to focus on that part let alone take a pic. Thanks

As I posted previously, the pedal pawl pivot bracket needs to be adjusted to the rear. It is not necessary to bend the pawl itself. A minor adjustment of the bracket where it is mounted to the floorboard will allow the pawl to fully engage the rack on the pedal. The posted photos show full engagement which is proper.
