Tractor
Hinomoto C144
Hey guys,

I have a Hinomoto C144 (650kg 17hp) for generic and vineyard use. It's very hilly as it's in a valley.

I currently use a 100l sprayer with 100m of hose, the tractor can carry it fine, although I've had a bit of air in sloped turns when I ran 50m, after upgrading I don't really need to get into such tricky situations to reach everywhere, and for high angles I just reverse.

However I'd like to upgrade to 200l, as water access points aren't plenty, so I have to disconnect the hose, go refill, come back, reconnect the hose, run to the gun, keep spraying. With 200l it'd cut these time wasters in half, and in some places remove them. However I know the front wheels would be all up in the air with that weight, unless I managed to get loads of front ballast.

I was wondering on how the physics would work out if I added some wheelbarrow or similar sized wheels to the bottom of the sprayer, when full I'd carry it low so the weight would be on the wheels, when empty, or for turning (in level places only phew), I could lift it, like 3pt trailer. Thought this might work for the transport box too with removable wheels, as sometimes I have to carry lots of stone, or other stuff.

I've seen some small 200/300l sprayer trailers for 500-750, while 200l 3pt sprayers are 750-1000, but those will always have less maneuverability, which is a major concern in vineyards, so unsure about it. but also considering. Also thought about making with an old bull trailer I have around, but don't think the work and cost of the container/pump/connectors etc would be worth it. At the same time I'm also considering switching to the next model up (Hinomoto 2304), but it's half a meter longer.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Edit: I just realized this might not be the right section, it's more about advice than something I'm building, sorry about that.

you can probably add wheels but those hills look steep. my concern would be the lift capacity of the 3pt hitch. water is heavy. 2.2 pound per litre so you are adding 220 pounds by doubling the capacity.

If the three point can lift it it the rest of the tractor was designed for it. I would get the proper front ballast and skip the wheels on the sprayer.

Yep very steep indeed!
Max lift capacity is according to info I've found 550kg, 85% of tractor weight.....so I guess it can LIFT, not sure for how long 😆

Still, I'm interested in how much wheels would help stabilize stuff on the 3pt, be it the sprayer or a box worth of rock or fertilizer. Btw, is there a rule of thumb for front went ballast versus 3pt weight?

I would be afraid the bigger load might push you down the hill !

I think you have a tractor a bit too small for the work you're doing, which makes it very dangerous for you. I had a similar sized Kubota, while it does some amazing stuff for such a small tractor, it's really meant to handle a tiller on rice paddies. Not necessarily carrying big loads on the 3pt.

With your type of land, I would be looking at a bigger tractor. Something like an isodiametric/articulated tractor or a crawler tractor. Preferably something with ROPS.

The crawler tractor would be great, although, if you need to use it on pavement, it will make a mess.

The articulated tractors like the Antonio Carraro ones, it's what they use on the big vineyards on the Douro valleys. These tractors have a very low center of gravity making them very stable on steep hills.

You may still do it with extra front weight but be careful. Sorry, I'm sure this not exactly what you were looking for.

You do have a beautiful property.

Ahah I have seen those, I'm in the region too. Also when shopping around they're usually parked at very weird angles like this one

I was persuaded against it (albeit not by user), and they looked huge/wide compared to mine, but the maneuverability and safety probably makes up for it. Paved road wise, I do need to use them but 1-2km max.

You're definitely right about the tractor being too small for some of the things I do, e.g. the trailer is 60% of the weight of the tractor, for one of the firewood spots which has a very steep "road", I end up just taking my samurai, which ends up being more productive in wood/hour units. I think I need to have a better look at upgrading it or getting an additional one.

Here's some more pics of stuff I've persuaded it to do :D

Also thanks for the compliment, I don't actually have many pics of my property specifically but here's a couple.

Kinda de-railed the "biy" park of the thread, should probs gone for an introduction...

Yes the older articulated tractors were very dangerous because there wasn't much sheet metal protecting the operator from pinching the legs when turning. There newer ones are pretty good actually.

Great looking propriety indeed.
