I have a swisher tow behind brush mower that has a pull start Briggs and Stratton on it. There is however a key to turn it on and off but does not have a starter just the pull start. I have lost the key and I want to replace it with a toggle switch. The wire harness from the engine to the key has red, black, green and gray wires. How should I wire this to a toggle switch? Thanks!! Pry apart the existing key switch, and see what is connected/disconnected when you turn the key. At the point you can buy a suitable switch.

Did you buy it new? I'm guessing it might have had a starter at one time.

I bought it new, no starter on it. I just want a simple toggle switch so no more key.

Does it have an anti backfire solenoid below the carb?

Look on the engine and find what wires are actually being used. If there is no battery, or electric starter, then most likely there is no electric clutch, and no fuel solenoid on the carb. Most likely the only wire you need to worry about is the black wire from the ignition module. Normally red would be battery, white would be starter, and grey would be the fuel solenoid, at least on the engine end of things.

Black wire to toggle switch, then make a another black wire to go to the frame of the mower.

Thanks. I just looked at the mower. Grey goes to the carb, black goes into the engine somewhere. The green is ground and the red one goes into something that has yellow and red coming out. Sounds like I just need to hook up black and the ground on the toggle.

Sounds like you have a fuel solenoid on the carb. Then the red wire needs to make connection with the grey wire when the engine is running. Just whatever you do don't allow the red wire to supply power to the black wire. You will be replacing the ignition module if you do. When the old key switch worked. I would suspect that in the key on position you had continuity between red and grey. and open between black and green. Then reverse the connection for key off position.

I doubt there is anything special about the key you lost. if metal switch most likely indak key and if plastic switch then delta key. Probably be able to pick up either key at Walmart or someplace similar.

Thanks to randyt it's running again. I unplugged the harness from the key switch and it started right up. To shut it down I cut the green and black wire from the harness stripped the ends and crossed them and it shut down.
