After checking with the consensus of this band of tractor drivers, I started looking at all the various Mini configurations and still had some questions. So this past weekend I jumped in the Subaru with Tuppence the Wonder Dog and made the three hour journey to our nearest Mini dealer in Latham, NY.
Halfway there I thought "This is ridiculous!" and nearly turned around...but a call to my wife and her pointed reminder that I was almost there kept me going.
First impressions of the dealer were less than favorable, as they didn't even acknowledge my presence at first. But then I realized they were taking care of a couple who had driven their new Mini back from Connecticutt for service of their non-functional wipers on a day the service department was closed. The dealer actually called in a service tech on his day off, then gave the couple complimentary tickets to a cinema down the road so they could watch a movie while their wipers were being repaired! Pretty cool! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I had a couple of concerns about the Mini. I'd heard the ride was especially harsh over uneven pavement and that the engine labored so much at 70mph on the Interstate that you couldn't carry on a conversation. Instead of addressing my worries, the sales guy put me in a car and directed me to a twisty road with bad pavement. Maybe living on a dirt road has made my buns less susceptible to bumps, but the car felt and handled just fine. Then he directed me to the Interstate and we hit 80mph while talking comfortably. So both concerns turned out to be bogus.
Besides, they gave Tuppence bottled water so she didn't have to drink fountain water, and found a towel so she could go for the test ride with us. Dog friendly folks deserve my business.
There were a couple of options I'd been considering that were scratched off the list after I saw them in person. In the end, I put together the car and options that best meet our needs and submitted the order. It'll take a couple of months to arrive, but it's not like I have nothing to do in the meanwhile.
Oh, and we're getting the ultimate sheep farmers' license plate: EWE DOO /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
