I'm planning to add a new building to the farm. There will be a finished area for family get togethers and it would be nice to have a bathroom in the building. We're on a septic system at the house. It would be a pretty far run to try and grind and pump that from the barn, to the septic tank at the house. (Assuming the county would "allow" that...not worried about it right now)

I thought I'd ask to see what others have done, or come across?

Run one drain line from your sink out into some bushes that could use the water. Then build a small septic system for the toilet. While not legal anymore, using a plastic 40 gallon drum as a tank has worked for decades for a lot of people with a simple drain field of perforated pipe and gravel. For the amount of usage a barn toilet will get, this should work just fine.

I agree with Eddie's plan.

Definitely put in a bathroom. Regardless of the logistical issues.

Even if you use a leach field,I would set it up for aerobic digestion and skip disinfecting stage. If you need irigation, complete disinfection stage so that water can be pumped out onto ground surface. For conventional anaerobic system to handle sudden heavy demand, the storage capacity would have to be as large as the one at your house,if not larger.

If it is a new building are you not going to have to pull a permit? If so and you build out the bathroom at that time they are going to want it to code. We can only add structures under 200 sq ft here without a permit and then only if there is no plumbing.

Exactly what I was thinking...

If you are on a septic tank system then you probably have a well too. There are good reasons for the modern regulations and the safety of your drinking water is one.
We just installed a Sun-Mar composting toilet. They are self contained and oder free due to a negative pressure fan in the exhaust pipe.

I really don't know enough about Septic System to make a good suggestion... i.e. size needed, how to run the pipe effectively... !
I would and only because you mentioned it will be a Family Gathering Area, put in a decent quality Septic System, take pictures along the way and don't worry about permit until you have to.
It is easier to ask forgiveness... !

If you do a half-@ss job you will regret it later on down the pipe.

Ive seen houses at the end of subdivisions that were past the city sewer by at least 200 feet run a pump from their tank to the nearest manhole.
Most inspectors will allow a tank only with a float alarm that you have pumped when its full. No need for a leach field.
