pic is of a 64 4 cyl gasser red tiger ( 4000 thus a 172 ).

I'm guessing I have stuck valves.

found 2 bent push rods,a nd one kicked over to the side.. so I'm guessing 3 valves had issues of sticking.

have not puleld vcover to look at vtrain. ran out of time.

what are my chances of not having bent valves too.

I know.. I know.. no xray vision here either.. :)

as soon as I get Ime I'll start pulling tin and the tank and then the vc and tak a peak inside.

kicker is I drove this think just a few weeks ago to do some balding.

parked her like normal.. went to start and clink-clink :(

always something
probably mad at that IH I just picked up.. :) that and this junky gas they sell now probbaly glued some intakes open... GRRRRRR :(

I am afraid that the odds of not having damaged valves is probably low. If you do have any valve damage, I would also take the head in and have it magnafluxed as you could have also damaged the valve guides.

The lack of lead or other lubrication in the gas is definitely making it difficult to own or maintain old iron that was designed for it. The bad part is these things are not easily modified to run on the new fuels. Unlike the classic cars paraded around in the summer, most of these old tractors are still used to actual do what they were built for.

I stick with the flat-head Fords, back from the days when they ruled he industry. Ford never kept up after the "Red Tiger" came along. On the flat heads, the valves can be replaced with hardened versions, making the engine nearly bulletproof on modern fuel. They will even run ok on straight ethanol. You done well going with the IH, which I suspect will be a lot more forgiving on modern fuel. IH had a much better handle on the OHV engine than Ford did in the early days.

I hope you don't find any. The bigger issue might be getting them freed up. If they are stuck bad enough to bend the push rods, they may not want to move at all. You will also need to check the lifters and cam. Might just be time to tear the motor down and give it a rebuild. Then it will last for another 40 to 50 years. Besides, we all know you have nothing better to do this winter. As a bonus, you can give all of us something to do with daily updates on the progress.

as far as I can tell, all fords left the factory with hard valve seats intake and exhaust, except the wartime 2n wuth had hard exhaust seats only.

that should have continued with the 53+

in any case.. I don't think this was a seat issue.. but rather junky gas deposits sticking the ? intakes? and then making pretzles out of the push rods.

hope the tappet cups are ok, and the valves? we will see. I expect to find bent ones... I guess. so far I'm look at 2 bent push rods for sure.. maybee a third.

cam is art least turning as hyd pump runs.

lifters are moving too, none 'appear' damaged.. but I didn't inspect them closely either.. twas getting close to work time by the time I got the side cover off.

i agree.. they are likely very stuck.

darn thing has great oil pressure and had decent compression.. poor thing wasn't even ready for a re-work yet. probably had 10-20ys at least in her.

I went thru the steering and hyds .. darn...

bummed out..

if no valves are bent I'll be a happy camper.

I assume the valve just stuck / seized, rocker couldn't move, and the push rod just bowed out ont he 2 bent ones, and kicked off the lifter on the 3rd...

at least it's OHV and not OHC.. I can pull the tin and gas tank and rad and water pump and fan and head and not really worry about timing... makes it a lil easier anyway.. :)

I'm not a mechanic, but hafta ask. what makes you think the valves might have survived? shorter than the pushrod stems so less liekly to bend? closer to valve guide? etc?
