I'm betting this is common tractor knowledge that I'm not aware of!?

I noticed today the right side back tire is all the way out on the end of the axle. The Left side is right up against the inside of the tractor. So the right side is 6" or so further out than the left side rear tire.

The tractor came with a home made plow that looked like they attached it in the middle, like where the MMM goes. Maybe the previous owner offset the wheel on purpose for that? Or maybe they're "loose"

How should I have them and how hard is it to do? I've pulled engines and transmissions from cars, so just wondering if there's any tractor specific things to be aware of.

I use the tractor for mowing my lawn and brush hogging a small field. I would think I want them set the same distance. And probably wide since I'm mowing some steep hills.

I'll bet you a shiny new quarter that the asymmetrical offset was done for plowing. I would want to square them up too.

It sounds like you're pretty mechanical, so I don't think there is any rocket science to the task. Just make sure the tractor is blocked up very solidly since you might have to exert a little extra "influence" to get the wheel to move on the axle.

thanks for the tips, i'll be sure to solidly hold it in place. it appears from my parts manual that some of the hardware is missing. i don't appear to have any cotter pins or holding pins in place outside of the wheel like the parts manual shows.

guess i'll reposition the wheels and then get those parts from the dealer once i figure out how it's supposed to work.

is there a disadvantage to spreading the tires out wide? i'm not sure why i would want them in close?

I agree plow thing to. They do it on a couple 50hp tractors around the place.

Can't think if why narrow unless narrow setting is inside the sheetmetal and they have small places to get into. Sometimes you'll see LARGE tractors with the wheels set way inside, this usually means they too off teh dual wheels and didn't move the 2 that were left on. Also maybe certain row widths, etc. I know I have mine set all the way out, but I can't plow(cultivate) anything because its about 1.5 row width. To get 1 single row I'd have to move them way in. My tractor is to small for 2 rows.

Width always helps with stability on hills and such.

Also -
Are the rears "filled" or "foamed'?
If so make sure you've got the lift capacity for the tire.
I'd use a 6 pack and three strong sons :)

all went well. i moved the tire back out. there's only that one bolt behind the tire holding it in place. there's a hole through the bracket/hub thing and the axle shaft for a pin or bolt but nothing there. i put a bolt in it for now and will get the right Kubota hardware to secure it properly.

thanks guys, i went with wider stance since i'm on some hills.

For such as a blade or mower you normally want the wheels inside their width. Of course wider is more stable. As to row width compared to tractor width, farmers are now using so many different widths it is amazing. Just if you will be planting anything that uses a combine to harvest be sure it handles the width you plant. Also be sure any implement matches the row width.
