small spaces- Greenie went to work with me today. I started back last week part-time for boro, and when they turned water back on for summer-found out press. reg was shot. The boro BH is almost too big to get between the 2 basins w/o ripping one, so Greenie and I dug out the ground to get to regulator. didnt even hit the water line (knock on wood), worked out great, all thick, soaking wet clay. see pix
So anyone wondering a good use for a little tractor -this job was perfect example for having/using one.

Over the years, the little Satoh Beaver we have (with hoe & loader) has been called to service in many jobs where a normal sized tractor won't fit. Between trees and close to buildings it always does the job where others cannot go. Spent many hours at Boy Scout camp digging trenches for them.

Wagonguy, It looks like you did a great job. I'm guessing you had some
fun.

I didnt hit/break the pipe so that was a bonus. They had to hand shovel under the pipe to make room to spin the regulator on and that mud was heavy, watersoaked goo. Not having to dig that hole by hand -THAT was fun.

Bet you and your little guy will be called on for such jobs again in the future. All sorts of jobs reallly too small for a regular backhoe and too big for a shove are right up its alley.

I often dig a hole deeper along side the pipe so that a helper can shovel the dirt sideways into this hole. Makes the shoveling easier especially when the lines are deep.

While on this subject of digging I might add that you should never let someone on the ground touch your backhoe when digging. Reason being that if you were to hit an electric line they could provide the path to ground and be electrocuted. Also you should be cautious about stepping off a backhoe for the same reasons. You are better off raising the bucket up to grade to be sure you are not in contact with wires.

i dug out a deeper part to left of water line- more for a sump pit to let pump drain water away from where plumber would be working on pipe. the new reg. was taller than old one so he had to hand dig with a little shovel right under where the reg. attached to 2 water line ends.
Yes Greenie is the ideal machine for tight places and going into/over yards that you dont want to tear up just getting to digging spot.

Great job you did, wagonguy!!
However, if you plan on doing more of this, I do suggest you check on how the insurance is handled (rather you break your tractor or something on the jobsite).
I'm sure your homeowner's insurance will cover your tractor while it's on your property but probably not if you're elsewhere.

That can be an issue too, I know for me tractor and backhoe insurance runs about $4800/yr. and that is with limited use. I can see it both ways, but all I need to do is dig up the wrong thing or have someone hurt and the insurance will seem to be a lifesaver.
