Due to one broken finger, 3 pins, and large cast, I discovered 6 gallon fuel cans with flexible spout are kinda hard to handle with just one hand. So I went to harbor freight and picked up a battery operated pump. $9.99 - 20% off coupon = about 8 bucks! Uses 2 D-cell batteries. Safe for gasoline.

Tried it out today. Works fine!

I just opened the hood, tipped my seat forward, and set the 6 gallon can on the hydraulic tank. Stuck the pump in the can, the hose in the tank, turned it on and started counting.... 2 gallons in about 80 seconds.

Those pumps are great! Before HF had them, I bought one from Amazon, a premium version with float-actuated shutoff in the discharge tip. I suspect these were invented to refuel indoor kerosene space heaters in Asia.

I use it for refueling same as you described.

But recently when I overfilled a plastic tub while draining UTF, I tried the pump. (The plastic tub was too flexible to lift and pour). The pump could barely move that thicker fluid, even at net zero lift. Slow pumping was ok in that case because I was pumping into a fine-mesh, slow draining coffee filter to later reuse the UTF. I don't think it could move anything thicker than J20C (all-season UTF) or ATF.

Another application was to pull a sample from the bottom of the hydraulic reservoir on the backhoe. No debris, no water found. I'll leave the present fluid in there a while longer.

Everybody should have one.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Thanks, I feel fine. Just can't scratch my left ear!

I didn't want to get gas on my cast. This little pump was really helpful.

I bought two, one for each garage. Great little pump.

I bought one of these a while back but haven't tried it yet. Looks like it will be handy for a lot of situations. I have several of those metal "fire proof" containers that are a pain to use without getting fuel everywhere. This may be the perfect solution.

I got the idea from Andrew Camerata on youTube. I love watching his videos (although, full disclosure, not everything he does is OSHA or code compliant). He makes some very entertaining videos. Extremely hard working young man living a dream life for people like me. He must be under 30 but has a LOT of equipment he buys and repairs (2 dump trucks, 5 excavators, a man lift, a crane, fork lift, tractor, UTV, tracked loader, etc...).

Measure the openings of those cans before using the pump. My pump fits into Blitz plastic jugs of any capacity, was too fat to fit some other brand (Rubbermaid?).
