i have a 609 deere rotary mower. the shear bolt (grade 3) on the pto drive shaft keeps shearing. apparently, the 609 has a slip clutch. can i use a grade 5 bolt for the shear bolt?

If you have the manual, see what that calls out. There's a possibility the wrong shear bolt was installed at one time.
If the manual calls out a grade 3 and you use a stronger bolt, there is a risk to doing damage to your cutter.
That choice to accept such a risk is yours...

I'm a bit confused - if you have a slip clutch you should not have a shear bolt. The slip clutch may be under a plastic cover but it should be pretty obvious due to its size. Does your particular 609 cutter have a slip clutch?

i borrowed the cutter, but i looked on the deere webpage and they said the 609 has a slip clutch. as far as i can tell, the yoke of the drive-shaft slipped onto a spline that went into a gear box. i just looked at a picture on the deere webpage. the gear box didn't have the slip clutch. i'll call the deere dealer tomorrow.

On my LX6, which I think is a later successor to a 609 (I'm not sure), the slip clutch is on the driveshaft close to the gearbox, but before the U joint. It's about 5" in diameter. Under a cover it's just a bulge, but without a plastic cover it is very obvious as two metal plates with springs holding them together.

I bought the last lx5 my dealer had. It should have come with slip clutch and front and rear chains, but they ordered it without any of these. They searched other dealers and got me the chains, but I have not pursued a slip clutch yet. The manual shows it with the slip clutch, but it may have not come with one. JC

My LX5 has a slip clutch and a shear bolt. I use a grade 5 bolt in mine with no problems. The clutch will slip on certain occassions but if I really nail something hard the shear bolt will snap. It only take about 2 minutes to change.

My LX5 has a slip clutch and a shear bolt as well, I busted out the original bolt after about a year and replaced it with low grade bolts from a big box store. I've since upgraded to a grade 5 bolts and haven't lost one since. The original bolt was a pretty high grade metric allen bolt (I don't really know the grading for metric). The slip clutch works for most obstructions, but works almost too well and I get a bit cocky and occasionaly break the shear bolt.

If your LX5 has a slip clutch - then you have a drive pin, not a shear pin. The drive pin is a metric 10x85 grade 12.8 bolt.

If you are using SAE - you'll keep breaking them as they are too small in diameter.

If you shear the 12.8 - then it is because your slip clutch is froze up. You need to loosen the pressure bolts and slip the clutch a few times. Then tighten the bolts and gap according to spec.

That makes sense, I couldn't find the metric bolts locally- but the grade 5 SAE bolt is holding. I did adjust my slip clutch a couple of times but it's been about a year and it has been sitting outside. Time to adjust it again.
