I managed to get my hands on a 40" Yanmar tiller from a friend whose father passed away. It was left outside for years since it was last used. Upon initial inspection, it appears it still functions. Even has a few new tines in it as indicated by some new hardware bolting them in. The Tines turn with no play, no grinding. Crankcase and gearbox still have oil in them. I've never owned a tiller so I apologize in advance for the naive questions.

I can't understand the lower 3pt connections. The previous owner had a bunch of wire wrapped around the shaft area shown in blue. As soon as I removed the wire, the shaft floats in there. Floats as in a LOT of play in there for a tiller. I'm failing to understand why this floats in there and isn't welded in? Is it a service thing to be able to remove it? Looking at the top portion of the shaft in the photo, it appears that's some kind of slip fit maybe? Is the proper technique to open up that shaft and add as many washers as necessary to keep it taught between the 3pt arms? I'm likely way off basis here because looking at the photo, there's still some wire on the lower part of the picture. That keeps the hook closed. There's no wire on the top portion and I can unhook that 3pt bar by and literally remove it.

Anyone have an idea what type of gear oil these older units use? I found a manual for a newer Yanmar and they all seem to be running 90w everywhere. If this thing still functions, I'll go ahead and change out all the fluids.

There are some cracks in the housing as shown in purple; one of them quite large, but it doesn't appear to be causing any issues. I wasn't able to get the PTO shaft, so I'll be borrowing this afternoon to see if this thing works or not.

Appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Highly doubt you will get many answers here. Best to ask about Japanese tillers in the Yanmar section. A few of the members even had a bunch brought over to the US.

Yanmar

And on the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group, we have the tiller manuals for FREE.

As for oil, it's a toss up. 75W90 synthetic with friction modifiers or ATF+4 or J20C have been known to be used around the globe. Yanmar has the TF500A too. Pricey though.

Post over in the Yanmar section, we'll be glad to help out. Toss us the tiller model number too. :)
