OMC Mustang 440
Hello, I just bought a OMC mustang 440, he said he thought it was early 80 or late 70's, im not sure, it has a Wisconsin v 4 VG4D

I am not a equipment operator at all, although I have used a back hoe and track hoe a couple times, this is nothing like a backhoe

I would like to know more about it and the controls, I know the foot controls are for bucket two centers ones are for aux (nothing hooked up to) and the two stick forward reverse, but there is a lever on the left side of seat that goes down into the engine area and attaches to some type or hydraulic valve, I have no idea what this is used for

it is going to need some repairs, such as a starter ring gear, that large wide drive belt that runs for looks to be hydraulic pump to shaft that go outside to wheel area,
and it has a line leak, there are little things that are worn with it, but it runs, moves the bucket smoothly up down an d tilts,

, BUT it does not stop moving when you release the drive levers, like no brakes at all. IOW when they are in the neutral position it will roll, I bought it on flat land and did not catch that, he loaded it and a friend of mine unloaded it here, that is when he told me.There is no using it on a hill right now!
so what makes this stop besides pulling sticks back to go other direction? is there no "brake" to this at all? i have drove my friends New holland skid steer once and you could park it on a hill and walk away from it. BTW, I did send a message to mustang this am asking for a operator manual on it. and gave them the serial number so I can hope to find what year it is. I have seen some information for other model mustangs, but not a 440.

any help or pointing me in the right direction would be great, thank you - some pics attached is i can

Tom

Tom, I just posted over on your new member thread. The left and right levers control 2 friction clutches on each side in the chain drive. When you push forward 1 clutch engages the other stays in neutral to move forward, opposite clutch engages when going in reverse. The lever on the side control the variable speed drive clutch, move the lever 1 direction will make the hydraulic cylinder on the drive clutch move inward to increase diameter of area the belt rides on the pulley = increasing travel speed. Move lever opposite to reduce speed but increase drive torque, power.
As stated in my other post, this is exact same machine as a John Deere model JD24.

oh, thank you, I didn't see the notification, sorry for the double post then

I thought that belt was for some variable speed setup, it looks like the setup for my variable speed mill. Thank you , I will look further into this and see why tio just rolls away

BTW , that belt was really easy to remove, took about a split second, I moved the machine to get it out of the way for now, while doing it I decided to move a couple logs and then was going to push a rock out of the way some, where I wanted to park this, and snapo, the belt is off! At least it broke where I wanted to park it till I could work on it, but it sure could have waited till I found out about braking it, and got it in my garage to work on next week sometime <g> this should be fun to move down a small hill into the garage. If it is the same as the jd24 I found it weighs 4754 lbs at Ritchie specs

BTW, can you tell me what brakes this machine? I still have not found that information, what I found on a jd24 showed a hydraulic foot brake

thanks

Just got a bit of information on my Mustang 440 today from Mustang,

Tom,

This machine would have been made in 1976. We would not have an Operator's Manual for this machine. OMC went bankrupt in 1986 and all manuals prior to then are no longer available. I have heard of people purchasing them used on websites such as ebay.

The numbers on the tag would be:
Machine Part number - 512-191
Machine Serial number - 1762
Models the tag was used on - OMC 1200&440

Well I took a gamble and ordered a manual for a JD24, seems a lot of it is the same, however hte jd24 was equipped with a hydraulic foot brake, My OMC 440 has not brake like that at all,
