Why is it I get to start all over with the thread when someone decides to reply with a new post?

Is this normal or am I not eating my cookies right?

Now, Mike, I know I'm a bit of a computer dummy, but this time, I don't even understand your question. :D

When someone replies to an old thread, years old in this case, my browser acts like it has never seen the thread before. It starts at the beginning of the posts. I am looking at a thread that was started years ago.

I have had a few examples these last few days.

Is it me? My setup? Or is it suppose to work this way? I don't think ot should work like this..... :)

OK, Mike, now I understand the question, but still don't know the answer. I'm a big help, right?:D I guess my browser takes me to the first "new" post that I haven't seen or marked as read. So I think in a case like you mention, if I've read or marked as read that old thread, then I'd go directly to the new reply, but if I never looked at that thread or marked it as read, then I'd go to the original post that started the thread. But if I use the search function to find a thread, then I'm taken to the first, or original, post.

I notice the same thing but it occurs even when there has not been a post for about a month or two. Instead of taking you to the last post it takes you to the first page. It can be confusing if you don't immediately look at the date.

It would be nice if there was some sort of alert to let you know this is a very old post so people don't start replying to questions or points made several years ago and creating confusion for all.

Go to My Home and the to edit options and scroll down you will see this and under thread displays you can change it to show newest first:

Thread Display Mode - Here you can choose the display mode for threads. For a full explanation of the modes, please view this help page.

Ok,

Let me try again. I read posts today (on topic A). Or I mark all as seen, today. I have no more posts to read.

A year goes by. I will have a bunch of new posts, and topics. Again, I catch up.

Another year goes by and I am caught up on a daily basis.

Now someone posts to topic A.

My browser and configuration thinks I have never read topic A before, and it shows the original post that started topic A.

It should just show the newest post under topic A, it does not. It shows topic A and all posts under it, regardless of date.

My configuration has lost the "seen" marker in time for topic A.

Thanks.

As far as I can tell, that's just the way it works. The forum's engine and/or the cookie it uses seem to be able to remember just so much and then it forgets that you ever saw the thread.

I don't know if it's time elapsed since you last read it or that it can only remember a certain number of threads. Either makes sense as a way for the site from having to keep track of too much stuff for too many people.

It's not a wonderful solution but if I pick up a thread, realize that I've landed on the first page of an old one, I just hit the click on the link for the last page and work backwards.

'course with my memory getting the way it is, old threads are new to me most every morning :)
