I have an old Steiner S20 with a 60" deck that uses two flange style bearings for each deck spindle. I am not sure when Steiner stopped using this setup, but it is old.
The deck has never cut very well, so I am digging into it and I found several previous owner repairs. It looks like the bearings were replaced and reinstalled without regard for the spindle alignment (there is some play in the flanges that allows for aligning the spindles), and the blades cut at an angle. I also think the blades are set much too low (the blades hang below the front edge of the deck by 1/2 in one spot).
Does anyone know what cutting height I should set the blades with respect to the front edge of the deck, and has anyone worked on this style of deck? Any insight into how to align the spindles so the blades all cut on the same plane?
