Going to look at a Michigan loader, what I think is a 75a, straight frame rear steer 4x4 6cyl Gas Cab. Thinking It might be a decent old farm loader, gotta be better than a tractor loader. Anyone have any experience with such a beast. My use would be very light, manure, snow, round bales and such, we don't do silage, but it would get used a couple of times per week year round. Actually I would still have my loader tractor so it might not even get used that much, maybe just for the heavier stuff. Not sure if it would go in the barn, 9' door, that's where I usually park in winter to keep tractor warm from the animals. Oh yeah, if it matters I would rather have an old tractor than a new one. Bought 2 new, got that out of my system.

Any advise would be helpful

A loader on a tractor is a backwards impliment. Strong axle is on the wrong end. Weak steering gear is in the wrong spot. The heavy engine is in the wrong end for ballast. A real loader is a much better piece of equipment than a tractor loader.

My neighbor has an old Allis Chalmers 545 wheel loader that he uses occasionally around his place. He's 91 years old and still can climb the ladder into the cab.

Last time was a few years ago to bury one of the horses. That 545 is a real beast.

Hope you have the skills and tools needed to repair one of these old loaders when it craps out.

Good luck.

Pulled the trigger, drove it around a little. Pushes real good, strong hydraulics. A little slower than the Deere 544 I'm accustomed to at work, but better than the farm tractors I'm used to around here. The bad is the steering box needs attention, steers real good one way but when you turn the other the steering wheel lifts, if I push down hard on it, turns that way too. I looked up the parts list and it is a simple thrust bearing set up, I am sure I can fix it easily. They put an internal regulated alternator on it, but no wire to excite the field, I sparked it and it charges good. Just little stuff, but what would I expect for 50 yrs. old. I think its going to work out pretty decent. They are going to deliver it later this week.

How much does a machine like that lift? Pics would be cool if you have time!

My brother bought one for the farm as things just keep getting bigger and heavier and he needed the lifting capacity. In general he really likes it but it is so heavy he has a lot more tear-up of the ground when it is wet and it really likes to sink. Also the repairs are a lot more expensive in general.

I'm guessing lift capacity in the 4000 lb. range, machine weighs close to 12k, sand/gravel is 3800 lbs. per yd. give or take. I think this machine has a 1 yd. bucket. Michigan 75a 1.jpgMichigan 75a 2.jpgMichigan 75a 3.jpgMichigan 75a 4.jpg
I'm running tractors in the 8k-9k range, with equipment behind them, so the weight should not be an issue, the biggest part of my loader work is on gravel and concrete anyways, except loading round bales, and I doubt if this will ever see a field.
