I've got an old tractor (1968) with a Briggs and Stratton either 9 or 10 HP motor on it. I can't seem to find any oil dip stick, drain plug or anything and it needs to be changed because it sat for 5 years. I also have no idea what the capacity or fluid type is. It's off an old Simplicity, and the only reason I'm not posting this in the Simplicity forum is because it's really dead over there. Any help is appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken the dip stick was integral to the oil fill plug on those old B&S engines. When you pulled the oil fill plug the dip stick was attached. It was easily broken off, and hopefully not in the engine. There should be a drain plug on the bottom of the motor. As I recall it had a square head on it. Sometimes it is hard to find. One mower that I had (Montgomery Ward I think?) actually had the plug behind the housing and I had to loosen the motor mounts enough to get to it. Some of the smaller lawn mowers with the 3 1/2 or 4 HP engines didn't have a drain plug at all - you had to tip the mower on its side to drain it or pump out the sump with a hose. How about some photos of the tractor?

Here she is, the previous owner had it for the last 20 years, but it sat for the last 5. Some fresh gas, air in the tires, and a jump start she fired right up and drove into the truck. Not a bad deal for free. The hydraulics have a leak somewhere, the blade slowly sinks down in the upright position, and the main pulley for the tiller attachment is banged up. Other than that she isn't in too bad of condition.

ON older B&S motors, they used the oil fill port to set oil level. No dip stick, just fill the crankcase with oil till it is level with top of fill port. IF I remember, I had an older 8 hp model and it used about a little over one half quart for a complete oil change.

Good to see you putting a bit of TLC into 'er, should run a very long time for you. Not that most people check anyway, but with the dipstick that hidden it doesn't sound like it was going through much oil.
