Last fall I built a power unit from an old lawn mower to power my log spliter. Showed pics on here.
The suction side of the pump required a 1" dia. hose to connect it to the fluid reservoir. I found some hose that looked like Neoprene and seemed like it would work. I had used that material in a petroleum application before and had no problem so I thought what the heck. Price was right. It is marked Gates premium hose but I think it was for radiators.
It's been about 9 months now and the other day I noticed the hose sweating all over and down the full length. Since it's summer I thought it odd that something was sweating. So I rubbed my finger down it and came back with hydraulic fluid in my finger. Hmmmmm.
Yesterday I surfed the www and found out that particular hose was made of EPDM which is not suitable for petroleum products. So I looked around the area and found some suitable hose that is at a supply store at about $8 per foot...need about 5-6.
Some you win some you loose. At least I got the right hose for the high side return to the hyd filter and inlet to the sump, but it was 3/4" and easier to find. Same guy sold me that that has the 1".
Have your laugh.
