Ok, so I'm in the market for a used Diesel F250 4x4. Does anyone know where I can get an aftermarket exhaust brake? That is one accessory that I am planning on installing. Also, does anyone know how difficult they are to install? I havn't bought the truck yet but I'm just exploring my options for when I do.

Banks has one. BD diesel has one and U.S. gear makes one as well. I think ATS sells one too.

Most of these are turbo mounted although if I remember, U.S. gear has one that installs anywhere on the exhaust. Just about any of the vendors on the diesel stop can help ya buy one. Your green parts store can get a BD diesel one.

Before purchasing the truck I'd at least look on the websites of or contact the companies that sell these to make sure they have one that will work for you. Somewhere I recall reading that some of the older diesel pickups were not entirely compatable with exhaust brakes. I don't recall the problem but believe it put too much stress on the engine or the exhaust system.

It would be a shame to purchase the truck then find out the exhaust brake you wanted to purchase won't work.

I'm going to make real sure that the truck I buy is going to be compatable with the exhaust brake before I buy the brake. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy the truck I like the most and then spend some time looking for the proper brake.

If you have already done so, look up the Ford Diesel website. Like the GM and Dodge devotee' sites, there is a wealth of info available.

That's what I did before I bought my Ram. I know that using a brake with the Dodge automatic tranny used to cause problems. Dunno' about Ford.

I have a BD on my Ram for some 140K miles or so. In all that time, I only ever had to clean the o-rings and valve body in the electric/vacuum switch once.

While the "E" brakes are nothing like a true retarder brake, they really take the edge off so to speak. They add a true measure of safety when you haul and extend the pad time on your service brakes alot.
