I've had my JD 2305 for about a month. Checking the oil I see the level is about 1/2 inch over the full mark on the dipstick. Will this hurt the engine? Also the manual states the transmission fluid should be 1/2 to 3/4 in the sight glass, but this too is all the way full. Is this OK? I apologize if this has been covered before.

Oil for engine should never be to full.
I have been told that tranny does not matter.

There is too much oil in that engine. It could cause seal failure. Recommend
you drain down to full mark on dip stick. Tranny oil is probably ok. My 4110
tranny sight glass has been full for 3 years with no problems. Temperature of the oil causes the fluid level to fluxate in the sight glass. Hope this helps.
Go drain. Good luck

Thanks for the info, I will drain it tomorrow. I wonder, would it have come from the factory this way, or was it overfilled by the dealer?

I'm not saying you are wrong, but how would it cause seal failure?

I was told that if there was too much oil in an engine such that the crankshaft "splashed" in the oil as it went around, it would beat the oil to a froth. The oil pump would not be able to pump enough oil to the engine in it's frothy form.

Also, while it's probably no the case, you should make sure you don't have a fuel leak or a coolant leak that is ending up in your oil sump. You would see the coolant when you drain the oil. Also check the oil again after a while to make sure the level doesn't rise.

I would drain it down to the proper level and watch for any change. Too much oil may cause excessive exhaust smoking.

I drained it down today. The "unofficial" amount was about a half quart over. Now it is just under the full mark. Thanks to everyone for your help. I'm still wondering why it was delivered over filled.

1/2 a quart out of how much did you fill it with?

Smell that oil you took out. Make sure it's just "oil". An old '52 pickup of mine had the same issue, getting 'fuller'. Ended up the diphram in the fuel pump had a leak. Still pumped fuel, but some of it was ending up in the crank case. I wondered why the oil pressure went down so fast after changing....
