Oil on trailer floor ??

I have a 16 Ft. trailer that I use to transport round bales of hay. The wood floor ( 2x6's ) was painted when I got it but has long ago worn off to raw wood from setting in the weather for several years. I am thinking of putting used oil or hydraulic fluid on it to try to preserve the wood from the weather. My question is; which will work the best, used oil or the hydraulic fluid ?

I would think they would be about the same. I need to coat mine again. With the inferior pressure treated wood now days, I use regular lumber and coat it with my waste oil (hydraulic, motor mixture) and blend it 50/50 with diesel. It soaks in and does not really leave a mess like lots of people think.

I agree with Dave. Thin that oil abit. If you just put thick oil on it, you may end up with some slick spots. I oil my hay wagons in the fall and leave out in the sun a few days.

Some day when you re-floor I think you'll find the worst rot takes place where the wood isn't allowed to dry in a timely manner and not on top where the preservative is applied. The ends, edges and worst of all where the floor contacts the purlins rot first. Usually any rot on the top surface is the result of an imperfection in the lumber like knots etc. or even the lumber being installed wrong side up.
