I was reading old posts and found others finding that the level on the dipstick is not correct when filling the engine with 6 liters of oil as recommended.
can anyone tell me the correct oil level in the sump (meaured from say the oil pan to block joint)? My level is about 1 inch below this point. It looks to be below the crankshaft counterbalance , which I think is the critical point to prevent foaming. The oil level is above the high mark on the dipstick , but not showing if filled with the alternative amount of 3.5 liters. I have removed the oil sump "motherboard" and inspected it to eliminate the possibility of sludge giving a false level. One possibility is that the rubber stopper on the dipstck was bonded at the wrong height during assembly . Is there is a third oil sump size between 3.5 and 6 liters ?

Amez- How much oil did you take out when you changed it? My 2007 284 uses only 4 quarts. Yes I measured what came out over filling can be as bad as under filling. -Ed

I didn't measure the original volume . To bring the level to the top mark on the dipstick is 5 liters. I am wondering why there seem to be several different volumes for the same engine . This is why I would like to find out how far the level should be below the crank.

Can anyone with a 6 liter oil capacity Y385 tell me the length of their dipstick tube (the portion showing) and the distance from the dipstick rubber to high mark ?
My tube has a "Y380" sticker on it . I'm wondering if the wrong tube (or dipstick) is sometimes installed.
My tube = 5 3/8 inches
My dipstick stopper to high mark = 10 3/8 inches

I went out and measured mine and let me tell you its cold. Anyway my tractor is a 2003 with a Y385 and I had 10 3/8" from the bottom of the dipstick stopper to the full mark like yours and I had 5 1/4" on the tube and it very well may have been 5 3/8" but thats close enough. I have always used 6 qts of oil and it has worked fine for me and brought it right up to the full mark. Like some others have stated I have heard of some tractors using a different oil pan and less oil, something like 4 qts.

Mine is a Y485, so I don't think I can help. Tractors not at this location anyway. But you two should note that AMEZ says his oil line is 10-3/8" down from the collar, DP says his oil line is 10-3/8" up from the bottom. Unless the dipstick is 20-3/4" from collar to tip, those can't represent the same oil level.

AMEZ-
Thanks for the pictures. My Jinma is 2007 284 with a y385 engine and mine measures out the same as yours and Chris's. I think Chris could be right about different oil pans. -Ed

Sorry about that Greg and others. I should have stated it better. It is just as Amez's, 10 3/8" from the full mark on the dip stick to the collar just as his is. The end result is my measurements are the same as Amez's. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for that. It seems like I have a different size oil pan . I think I'll go by my dipstick from now on.
