i have thought this for a long time, an finally found the proof last week: i have always thought, that you can find someone that has put 200K+ miles on a vehicle, with any brand of oil made: well last week, i was in wally world an ran into a friend that was getting oil and filters for his 2 vehicles: both have over 200k miles on them: i asked him what type of oil he uses, and his reply was: " whatever is the cheapest": talking more he said he has never tried to put a specific brand in either vehicle: an really doesn't pay much attention to the numbers on the oil either: 10w40 or 10w30 etc etc..almost makes me want to shed a tear!

How often does he change oil & filter? You know the old cars before the days of oil filters and hydraulic valve lifters used to use a non-detergent motor oil. But folks usually changed oil at least every thousand miles, too.

Naw, he's just been talking to my late father in law. :) ;)

For those who wonder why I said that, in another thread Bird saw I posted that my late father in law did just that, bought the cheapest oil he could find, and it worked great for him.

I have never used the same brand of oil. I always bought what was on sell as long as it was a name brand oil like Mobil, Shell, Quaker Stated, Pennzoil, ect. I also use the dreaded Fram filters along with alot of Quaker State filters and never had one single problem. I run a marine business and we change the oil in over 75 boats, plus my tractor, mower, generator, 3 trucks, car, plus some other equipment for a mowing business. Never had one internal engine problem in over 20 years of doing this work. The way I see it all the oils and filters meet or exceed manufactures specs. Yes, there are better products out there but I see no need for them.

Now that being said my New Nissan Titan came with Valvoline Synthetic in it and I plan to keep using it. Its about the cheapest full synthetic on the market.

Chris, 50 years ago, both the oil companies and car dealers, and I think car manufacturers, recommended against mixing different brands of oil, supposedly because different brands had different additives. Many people swore that mixing brands would cause your car to start using oil. And if you decided to change oil brands, you could expect a car to use oil for the first couple of oil changes, then it would be adjusted to the new brand. Were those things true? I tend to doubt it, but can't really say. At any rate, I usually stay with one brand.

Back when the fleet management was part of my responsibilities, there used to be a salesman who always had a booth at the National Association of Fleet Managers, Law Enforcement Group, conventions. Even he called his product snake oil (said it wasn't an additive, but a lubricant). He did the demonstration you may have seen elsewhere by using an egg beater in oil in a pie pan and the oil would foam, but then he'd add his stuff and instead of foaming, the oil would climb up the egg beater. He once told me that he always used Pennzoil for his demonstrations because it would foam more than other oils. Anyway, I never used Pennzoil until the last 5 years, but 30W Pennzoil is what I now use in my lawnmower.:D And I change it every 50 hours or less.

Well I have been on both sides of this one. I used to never care about brand, as long as it was the right weight. I had a high mileage truck (Dodge D 50) that was using a 1/2 a quart a day on my commute to work(100 miles a day). Switching to Castrol cut the consumption in 1/2. I ran it nearly 150,000 before selling it.
Any more I buy only Rotella for my tractors and Motorcraft for my Fords. Reasons both are available at Walmart and Motorcraft is cheaper than a lot of the other brands anyway.;)

I purchased a Massy 50 years ago. Changed oil in it same day I got it. I used Quacker State and in 50 hours it used a quart every 5hrs. I was about to overhaul the motor but I needed it so changed oil in it to Castral and it stopped consuming oil. I've never been able to figure that one out. Kept that tractor another 5 years and my oil was never low again.

I have heard from many old timers that Kendal Motor Oil would stop consumption also. I have not seen Kendal in the last 10 years around these parts.
