Hi,

Ford 860 would not start today -- no spark at plugs. Pulled distributor cap, and inside was coated in oil. Cleaned the points a little and it started.

Is this typically a bad seal? I recall when I rebuilt the distributor a while back the shaft was somewhat loose, so not sure if oil could come up the shaft as well.

Is this typically what is needed to fix: http://www.steinertractor.com/FDS3253Distributor-Bushing-and-Shim-Kit?&TF=3CE657080C94

Thanks,
Cliff

yes and no. keep in mind you have to ream that bushing to fit!

make sure your crank breather is open and not fouled shut. if it is fouled, that's why you could be getting oil into the dizzy. even with a slightly worn bushing, etc, if the crank breather is open, it shouldn't push too much more than vapor up in there.

clean t with carb or TB cleaner and then check that breather.

check valve cover breather as well.
