Hi:

I'm about to change my Oil in my 2305 and put Synthetic in it. All the grades of Mobil 1 5/30 aren't E4/E5, CI-4/CH-4, or E3 rated. Mobile 1 Truck Diesel 5/40 meets those standards. Since it's synthetic do folks sometimes run a grade heavier? (If it was on the 'cold' grade I wouldn't even worry about it since cold synthetic flows so well).

What brand/grade of Synthetic oil do folks run in their 2305? It's supposed to take 5/30 or 10/30.

AMSOil 10W-30/SAE 30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil; AMSOil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD Oil, AMSOil 15W-40 AME Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Oil; and AMSOil 15W-40 PCO Synthetic Blend Heavy Duty Diesel Oil are just a few that are used in this tractor ....

I put in 0w30 Mobil 1 the last oil change and change once/year, usually 100 hours or less. Previous 2 changes were 5w30 Mobil 1.

I use Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic in my 2305.

the Rotella 5w40 is available at walmart or any auto parts store and is about $20/gallon.. The JD dealer carriers a synthetic oil that has gotten good reviews as well..

I am currently using the rotella synthetic, but the next oil change it will get Amsoil 15w40..

Ralph - Is the Mobil 1 you are using meet the diesel fuel rating the manual calls for? Except for the Mobil 1 Truck Diesel, the other Mobil 1's appear to only for gasoline engines but are CF rated. Most newer tractors probably atleast call for CI or newer spec'd oil.. Gasoline oils dont offer the protection diesel engines need in removing soot (or someother material)..

My JD 4010 manual calls for SG or better oil. Anything with a Cx rating is higher?

Anyway, I change well short of 100 hours and like the 0w rating for quick oil to the valve train on startup. I've a mixture of 0w30 and 5w40 in the 1983 240D Benz, as I had about 3 or 4 quarts of 5w40 left over to use in its last oil change of Mobil 1. It gets changed with 6 to 7k miles on it. Benz calls for 10k Mobil 1 oil changes; so, I figure that conservative enough. The 0w to 5w ratings are more important than super diesel protection, as these give more protection at startup when most of the wear will occur. If Walmart has the 5w40 available again, I'll buy it for the Benz. It isn't always available.

RalphVa - The SG rating is a gasoline rating (Cx is diesel rated) and it appears your 4010 was manufactured between 2003 to 2005 and has a diesel engine (from tractordata.com). I dont understand why the manual would reference a gasoline spec.

The API rating should probably be CH-4 (API spec introduced in 1998)...

Im not an oil expert by any means, but I have been recently intrigued by oil related stuff.. IF your tractor is actually a diesel and you want a lower viscosity for winter, you probably should stick to the Rotella 5w40 synthetic, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40, John Deere Synthetic or any of the other synthetic mfgs and get the cold weather protection and the extra diesel protection..

I'd guess that Ralph's not gonna endanger the longevity of his tractor by using a top-rated gas engine synthetic for 100 hrs or less. I believe that Deere recommends a 200hr change interval for oil use in small CUT's.

Now, if he were attempting to "extend" his oil change intervals (synthetic advantage) and was using his machine for heavy ground engagement work (rototilling for 50 hrs in 100 degree heat) then there might be reason for concern - IMO.

I've been using Rotella synthetic 5W-40 and Mobil 1 Turbo diesel 5W-40 in my trucks and tractor for several years with good results -- year around.

Although, the Deere synthetic (I think it's 0W-40) is cheaper up here and I'm seriously considering changing everything over to that when I work thru my stockpile of Mobil 1, etc.

I agree AKFish.

I'll continue to use John Deere fluids until the warranty period ends -- as RalphVA has mentioned in other posts.

Also, I change my oil about every 50 hours by the hourmeter -- about 2 hours 15 minutes go by on the clock by the time 1 hour as clicked by on the hourmeter on my little 2305. That's the worst for me -- idling so much time, or low RPMs doing "stuff."

I'm way down here in the Southeast -- South Carolina where December 25th had the high for the day in the low 70s. Hot summers down here with humidity ... upper 90s and 100s with 80% plus moisture in the air. Will more than likely run 15W-40 in my tractor Spring, Summer and Fall. Right now running 10W-30 JD Plus -- the preferred, recommended weight -- again until the warranty runs out.

Probably will NEVER run an "extended" OCI with it -- I'm definitely an OVER maintainer. My oil NEVER gets "black." It NEVER gets "grey." It's still "clear" when I change oil. Hopefully, it will be going strong when I'm gone! Almost 144 hours on it and 212 days old!! Uses NO oil! (FWIW cut about 6 acres a week s*l*o*w with 54C mower w/mulch kit.)

[Belated] Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!
