oil filters

can i use an auto motive oil filter on my log splitter as i need to replace oil as it got wet and a new filter form the hydraulics place is $30 but auto parts shop has car oil filter that will fit for $7

Is there a filter number you can read or know about? Most auto parts stores have access to entire filter lines, not just automotive filters. If you have a hydraulic oil filter number it is often easy to cross this over to a major filter brand and order it through them, spin ons are extremely easy to cross.

Most auto filters are in the 25-30 micron range, which is fine for a log splitter. The part that would worry me is the flow capacity as typical auto engine oil flow is usually <10gpm. If it doesn't blow up, you will be forcing too much oil through the filter medium, which will dramatically lower its ability to filter.

go to Baldwin filter web site , if you have a part # , it will probably cross . The site will also give you a list of local dealers .

Wix 51551 comes to mind off the top of my head but that filter is 10 micron rating......won't hurt it but most splitters use 25 micron rating as ISZ mentions.....this one is just a bit finer media....

best to cross over to wix or baldwin or napa with the right numbers....

51551 is probably the most common filter we see, but 51553 is also common which is a 35 micron. Those numbers don't mean a lot unless you know the thread though, not all filter heads are 1"
