Oil Filter number for Kohler 23hp Command?

I plan on doing my first oil change on my ZF-50 soon. It has about 11 hours on it now.

I know its a spin on filter, but does anyone know a brand name or part number so I can pick up the filter with the oil somewhere other than the Cub dealer? I bought the mower from a dealer about an hour away, so its not worth driving there for oil and filter.

Depending on how much room you have, you can run right up to a long motorcraft FL400A or equiv. You can x-ref the CC filter thru www.wixfilters.com, fram, etc..

Just found in the manual, of course they only recommend using Kohler brand filters.

For my CV23, the original filter is : 12 050 01.

While home for lunch break, I read the number on the filter and noticed the oil drain tube just reaches the edge of the frame and does hang down over and is therefore higher than the point exiting the engine. Seems like there should be a hole in the frame to drop the drain hose down through. Maybe there is and I just haven't found it yet.

I've heard several people tell me that it is not a good idea to put automotive filters on any small engine since supposedly the are very different inside even if externally they look the same. Is that the consensus here as well?

The Wix 51056 is their cross for the Kohler 12 050 01. It's not an "automotive" filter in that it seems to be designed specifically for this application. The specs on the Wix look better to me than the Kohler OEM item.
