My Kioti has two oil drain holes, the one will not stay tight (with plug in), has a small leak and drips about a drop or two every ten seconds. I can only hand tighten, threads are stripped.
Any suggestions on how I might seal this without taking the plug out. Just changed the oil and don't care to do it again.:)
Thanks for any help.

Wow this is a tough one. I don't know of a way to fix a drainplug that is leaking that way. I would drain the oil into a very clean container, fix the stripped threads and put the plug and oil back in.

maybe if they arent pulled to much you could use alot of teflon tape .
I have also seen and heard of a plug that is more made for house plumbing that is rubber and inserts and then the screw expands the rubber.(seems like a temp fix to me)

You could re-thread it to a pipe thread size that is the next size larger to your hole. Use grease on the tap to catch shavings then flush the oil sump. Thread inserts don't work well in these cases.

Lock-tite makes a thread repair kit that uses an epoxy in the stripped hole and you put a thread release on the good plug and it molds new threads around a good plug or bolt. A sales man dropped one off a while back but I have not used it yet. Not sure it will work if you can't keep it clean and dry while applying the kit.

I would hate to take a risk of the plug falling out and not knowing it.

I would drain the oil into a clean container and then fix is properly.

BTW is the unit under warrenty? How many times have you changed your oil for it to have failed??

Don't use that thread repair epoxy crap. It is junk. That stuff is about twice as easy to strip the threads back out than aluminum. It's like threaded plastic and won't last.

I would recommend dropping to oil pan if it's not too big of a pain. That way you can clean everything really good when done.

I would also just go to the next size drain plug and get the right size drill and tap. Pipe plugs shouldn't be used for drain plugs as they have to seal around the threads and not with a washer (rubber or copper). Usually the thickness of the pan in the area or the drain plug isn't thick enough for pipe plug as they neen a lot of threads to seal properly. And the threads are extremely coarse.

Pipe plugs also require teflon tape/paste to seal properly, which means you will have to do this with every oil change.

Just take the pan off and do it right...if it's not under warrenty

I agree with the others that it would be best to remove the pan and fix it properly. It's going to give you the most peace of mind. More hassle now, less worry later.

I would fix it right now, the oil is the lifeblood of your engine...and an engine replacement cost alot more than fixing an oil plug. I remember using a oil plug replacement once, that tapped its own threads as it was threaded into the oil pan, it worked well for me many years ago. It might be an alternative to check out. I believe that you can find this at an automotive parts store, I think that its packaged by HELP products. I'll see if I can find the website for you;) Check out this website www.timesert.com they have a kit made just for stripped oil pans, might want to give it a try!

Dang.. I'd fix it now.. if it hs stripped threds. then it is just waiting to dump your oil and ruin yor engine.

tap to next size threads.. preferably pipe, if you can..

Ive seen two aftermarket items work one is the self tapping plug. The other was a rubber plug that was a round ball w/ a washer shapped skirt that came w/ an insertion handle. You put the ball against the hole and pushed the tool thru the washer end to elongate the ball so it fits thru the hole. Removing the tool made it expand back to the ball shape and seal the hole. Worked well, just do not loose the insertion/removal tool...

If the oil pan is easily removed any good machine shop should be able to repair the threads.

soundguy has said it best. It's cheap to replace the oil, but not cheap to replace the engine. perhaps you could drive tractor tires up a ramp so oil pools on one siude away from leaking plug and remove the plug and add a O ring or hose facet gasket (its got a wider surface area) and add teflon tape to make threads seem wider and see if it you can make it stop until you can get the time/materails to repair the drain with new tap and larger drain plug.
