Anybody else seen oil coming out of the exhaust? It's leaving spots on the hood and dribbling down the exhaust pipe. Little puffs of white smoke when under load. Crankcase oil doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Power and everything else is normal. It's a YM1700.

Has this tractor been outside and been rained on by chance. There is a good chance you have water in the exhaust and it is getting black from the soot in the exhaust and when you carnk it up, it blows out the exhaust.

Might be diesel slobber..

I am pretty carefull and keep the whole tractor covered. We have not been getting much rain here this time of year anyways. The consisitency is slippery like oil and does not have the diesel smell. It is dark black in color.
What does "diesel slobber" mean?

sounds like a cracked head or blown head gasket. Either will let water into the exhaust and blow black soot everywhere.

Thanks,
Bruce

If it is engine oil, the valve seals on the exhaust valves could be bad. This will allow oil to run down the valve stem after shut down. This oil will accumulate on the top of the valve, and when you start the engine it will be blown out the pipe with the exhaust. In a case like this, there would seldom be any noticable increase in oil consumption. Messy and annoying, but in truth it could operate like this for years and never make a difference.
Watch the hood and see if this occurs just after start up. This would be the tell tale.

Warm up the engine well and see if it still happens. If you still have it coming out the exaust, see if the engine will still deliver full power. If things clear out with engine heat and enginge loading, the "slobber" or load stacking could be caused by light loads and low RPM running. If it doesn't clear up you might first remove the exaust pipe, clean if ubstructed or dirty, reinstall and try again. A diesel stays healthy if run at 1800 RPMs or above loaded.

I had the same problem with my 3110 and went thru the process of trial and elemination. On mine I did not have excessive smoke or usage but the top of my exhaust pipe would get wet looking.
I finall figured out it was working loaded all time. when I oen ed more fully the valve with the round handle directly under the front center of the seat it cured the problem. I think the valve is designed to control the drop rate of the three point hitch. It cured the wet exhaust problem.

That valve is for locking the 3ph in lifted position for servicing implements, and should be either fully open, (CCW), or fully closed, (locked). If you lift the seat there is a small lever, probably red, "T" or "L" shaped, that is used to adjust the drop rate of the hitch.

Thank you for the replies. I had another person helping me test a dirt bucket. He was running the RPMs lower ( 1500 or less) than I do which is between 1800 and 2200. We noticed the oil on the hood after he was using it. It appears that "lugging the engine" may be the culprit. Hint: never loan out your tractor or let anyone else drive it.

I recently set a 14' field fence and dropped some 8" fence posts with the boom pole. I had actually set the 8" by 8' post and didn't like where it went so I pulled it out with the boom pole. Wow! Had 150lbs on the bumper. Amazing what these little tractors can do.
