I'm not familiar with your engine, but on our in-line 6 Cyl Hercules diesel's from the 60's / 70's there is a filter where the vent tube attaches to the valve cover. The filters wearout over time and oil will spray like you are talking about. A new filter stops it.
So, you might want to check and see if yours may have had a filter. The filter material is a woven nylon, like a 3M Scotch Brite scrub pab.
