I would agree with you. But I am not a rep with LS or an engineer. I'm sure you'll be fine with 5w-40 full synthetic at the 50hr service. However, this might be a way to void your warranty should anything blow up. But without an oil test, good luck seeing the difference when the oil is drained. Just tell your dealer that's what your going with and if he will still honor warranty work.

Did the change today. used Chevron 5-40 full Syn. Picked Chevron, as they are partners with GS Caltex which is the Company that LS says to use. (and on sale at Wally's for $12 a gallon) So 1/2 way agreed with LS. :) Dealer gave me the choice. of 10-30 or 5-40, and at 50 hrs that engine should be broken in. Not to mention that I was in FOUR stores and not one had a multi grade mineral oil.

The filters were unbeliable. oil and HST were put on with super glue by superman. Reg Hyd came right off. Glad that you and other warned about dumping hyd fluid when you pull the HST filter. Also had the threaded part that the oil filter screws to be the piece that came loose not the filter. Thats nuts. LS really needs to not put filters on the way they do. If those filters came off the way they should, this would be a really simple job, instead of using huge channel locks and a chain wrench.

Thanks so much for all your input and answering my questions!!!

I believe they install the filters and then paint the tractors. The paint over sprays and locks the filters. The next change should be much easier.

When I did mine, I do not recall having a huge problem getting the filters off.

Just some more fun in the great oil debate. Got an email from LS Cust Service. it says:

According to our service representative in Canada; 5W40 is too thick and could damage the turbo. He also stated that the correct oil to use is called CK-4 5W30. I have included links that you may reference.

Wrote her back and said that 40w was one of their recomended weights for hot weather, and she is going to look. She is being very helpful, but the info she is getting is not helpful.

Well that really muddies up the waters...you would think if they are concerned about low temp viscosity they would recommend 0W40:(

RIGHT!!!

I mean common!! It's not freaking rocket science :hissyfit:(well kinda, more like chemistry)

Oil is very simple.

Example: SAE 5w-40
SAE = The Society of Automotive Engineers. Otherwise known as the standard measurement
:mur:
The first number is how thin or vicious the oil is at cold temps. So rating 5, is thin enough at cold temps to reach and lubricate the engine and components at roughly -22°F (-30°C) before it starts getting too thick.
:mur:
W stand for Winter
:mur:
The dash means absolutely nothing!
The 40 is the same rating as the 5, how 'thin' or vicious the oil is at normal operating temps. Too hot, the oil gets too thin. 40 goes all the up to 95°F (35°C) before it starts turning into water.
:mur:

Proper oil changes should be preformed at specified intervals to prevent oil from breaking down and turning into thin nasty black stuff.

Why people still do not understand this is freaking mind boggling. The oil works, and works well within the specified temperature range. It's a lubricant, with some added things like detergents, and stabilizers, but it's still a freaking lubricant! :censored::muttering:

I know, I'm preaching to the choir here. But it's just so frustrating, the amount of ignorance, from "experts," that only serve to further confuse the masses.

Yup, like NH did. I'm sure no sales guy pulled that number out of his behind. someone did some research and figured it was best

This is all so true. Wonder what they tell their customers down south? Park your tractor for the summer cause you need 40w and its too thick so you can't use it.
Not to mention, they pick an oddball oil that only Chevron makes and is not available except in a few places.
We all know that 5-40, and 15-40 are the 2 standards in diesel oil, at least based on what is for sale. I was in 3 auto stores, plus Wal-Mart, and if I pulled all the diesel of those 2 weights they would have all been 99% out of oil.
The best line in the owners manual is " in areas where prolonged periods of extreme temps are encountered, local lubricant practices are acceptable" So that pretty much says do whatever works for your temps. and here, 5-40 works. The range is between all 3 of their recomended weights. So as I asked C/S, how can 40 be bad for the turbo if they recommend 15-40?:smiley_aafz:

The LS "final" word :

Just to be clear, you can use either of these two oils CJ-4 5w30 or CK-4 5w30.
I hope you have a clearer directions now.

and this was one just before it::

The service and operator manual were created before and it's for normal conditions (general use), north of USA and Canada is a different temperatures than the south of USA. So we need a clearer oil.

This is only to preserve the engine for longer time.

Please let me know if we can assist you further.

God only knows what "clearer" oil is. This is REALLY scary that the Company does not go by their own service manual, and that they need to go to a Canada DM to get tech info on oil.

I have NEVER had this level of stupid from a manufacturing Company before on anything

Would love to know who made the choice of oils for the idential tractor that says New Holland on it.

Ok....

Lemme understand this. You can either use CJ-4 diesel engine oil designed for a tier 4 engine with a DPF, or you can use Ck-4 which is the exact same thing, but only 'out preforms" it, all in the same weight/viscosity?

pretty much all CK-4 oil is CJ-4 rated. It's kinda like going 55mph, you gotta go 50 before you can go 55!

It's not 30 weight.

"Clearer Directions?" :duh:
I... I just dont know. I have read and re-read that post, trying to make some kinda sense out of it. :irked:

LOL. Yup, same conclusion I came up with. I sent her an email saying almost all diesel oil was rated either CJ or CK. didn't get an answer except one saying that the Canda service manager was pretty smart and I should listen to him. (That email is at bottom of this post) At NO time has she said a word about the people that design and build the engine. I feel kinda bad for her, cause I know she does not know the answer, and has to ask someone else. But after a while it almost becxame a game of what silly response I was getting next. Oh yea, and I forgot. the oil the "smart" DM recommends is rated for ON road use. Go figure. I'm good with what I used which is teh same that you used and what most others are using.
